Hi! I am new to the forums, I am currently reding this through MTL and I wanted to add a few things.
Spoilers & opinions:
1.Yes the novel is draggy, mostly at the beginning, it has a lot of text, however it is also one of those novels with a lot of subtle text, so skipping parts some times is not that good.
2.Ouyang Ke, the "sister" at one part, when her mother was already falling into Ouyang Nuan's schemme, told to the step-mother (Lin-Shi, O.Ke's mother) that she knew she wasn't even Ouyang Zhi's daughter.
Apparently the evil step-mother drunk medicine to keep the baby in her belly for 2 extra-months.
2.Evil step-mother is the shu sister of the MC's biological mother. Her schemme starts from way earlier, when she convinces the MC's mother that she is good & gentle, so she settles for her to enter Ouyang-fu and promises to take care of her children once she's gone.
Because of MTL & me skimming through the novel, I am not sure whether she first becomes a concubine & after the mother death she gets promotef to main wife... however, her daughter (Ouyang Ke) remains a shu daughter, probably because the mother shu status doesn't changes, her backup is not the main Marquees branch but the side-one.
3.On the biological's mother demise, apparently there are other people involved.
4.The novel is more realistic, although it's also more tragic and still keeps some Mary Sue factor (everybody loves the MC). Things like Tianyu (the psycho ML) character & his relationship with her, the fact that she isn't 100% cold like most reincarnated Female MC, or how the secondary roles have more nuances and aren't just pure-evil like most of this genre's novels.
5.About psycho MC he is truly relatable to any nowadays abusive boyfriend/husband, only that with the time period, status & political circumstances, he is also someone whom kills more often.
I am just at a chapter where it is perfectly displayed that beyond being someone ruthless, he is also the abusive type. He's just hard-slapped Ouyang Nuan because she can't leave her beloved relatives & she refuses to leave the state (manor) they are currently hiding. His jealousy is the abusive type.
The MC actually developes some feelings for him, because she is more human than most reincarnated MC & she responds like most real life women would to someone that shows her he loves her to the extrem of protecting her. Even if she doesn't like innocent people to be killed, she can understand why he does the ruthless things she does for her. However, when she realizes that he will never be on the same side as her beloved Marquees' family, she knows that their relationship cannot be possible. But I bet the fact he displays his abusive behavior towards her plays a big role on her refusing to accept the feelings she has harvored for Tianyi.
6.About the ML, there is actually more developement on their relationship than I expected after reading the spoilers here. Is not even that much subtle.
He is the son of a woman that hated the MC's mother because his father was in love & obsessed with her. So he initiatlly hates Ouyang Nuan for the suffering his mother had (even though he knows his own mother was evil to MC's mother) .
But as soon as he first meet her (in the Great Princess' banquet, she's the one that will "foster" the MC), he has a lot of contradictory feelings and also realizes that Ouyang Nuan has probably suffered enough.
The first "encounter" is with MC's brother. Juer goes to shop with MC, she picks a book for him but ML also wants it (it seems it belonged to his father?), so the MC coaxes her brother to give it to him, letting Juer know the ML is Xiao Zhonghua, one of the emperor's grandsons. He doesn't get to see her but he knows she is behind Juer returning the book & he gets his man deliver a white wolf tail to her. Leaving the whole Ouyang manor puzzled.
He later tells her that was in behalf of his deceased mother, whom felt sorry for destroying MC's mother's life.
MC is a type of girl that has barely left her home, due to the way the evil step-mother raised her, so as soon as people meet & discover her, they all get shocked at her beauty & character. So does the MC, only that he tries to not show it much. However, he is trying to discard for good a possible marriage to the capital's first beauty, Ke Rong (She is the Quern Mother's protegee), so he deliberately chooses the MC at a competiotion they held in the banquet (he votes for her, but Ke Rong wins anyway).
Later, he keeps encountering her & sometimes he helps her, because she constantly faces troubles caused by people whom are jealous of her or simply mad because they've become collateral damage of her evil step-mother & Oyang Ke's schemmes. There is a point when she gets in a bad situation (I forgot when that was, if it was one of the schemmes against her Marquees relatives or his brother, or the time she was almost forced to get married) and she can't hold her tears, so the ML tells her he will help her because it's the first time he's seen her cry for something. He is actually moved by her, because she is smart & despite being someone whom is getting revenge constantly, she actually is capable of loving her closest relatives.
Later on, he confesses part of their mother's story: How his mother hated hers, so she schemmed for her to be married to Ouyang Zhi and she (ML's) forced being married to the Prince's house.
ML's Dad & Tianyi's Dad were both in love with the MC's mother so they fought but both lost in the end. That crashed ML's dad, so he never loved his main wife.
MC's mother apparently reciprocated ML's dad's feelings, but understood it was safer to be married to someone else, because both princes were politically in opposite sides & that would had endangered the Marquees' house.
It seems that ML wanted to express how he hated the MC at first, because he only saw her as the daughter of the woman that caused his mother's hatred and bitterness... but that he also changed his mind after meeting her, it looked like he wanted to tell the MC about hims having feelings for her but Ouyang Nuan got mad at him and she didn't grasp that last bit, also he didn't get to fully explain & convey his feelings.
I'll post more afterwards.
