A stupid father with good luck, a kick-ass and protective mother, and a dandy younger brother all want a principal husband.

Her engagement has been broken off three times yet she does not panic.

Beautiful and magnificent clothes, golden beams in their house.

She has money, she has power, why would she need a husband?

This is a story about a garish woman who has had her engagement broken off three times and a hypocrite of a man.

Does the ML revolt against the imperial in the end and make the MC his empress?
Do you remember anything about the side characters? Especially the female side characters the Mc has conflict with?

in other words that was his only redeeming quality, the MC's family held the last shred of his humanity and no one else

I get it, thanks so much. By the way, there is also one thing that I want to make sure.
Does the 2nd prince (Jiang Luo) really arrange people to stab XC and accidently castrate him? Or is it just MC's mom who arrange it and put the blame on JL?

Thanks beforehand.

By the way, I think I understand a little better of the chapter 53 which explains about ML's mother (from Lin family).

Based on my understanding, ML's grandmother is the half-sister of MC's grandmother (for this I will call EP: eldest princess), so that's where the ML's royal blood come from. ML's grandmother married (Mrs. Lin) the Lin family and she was involved in the throne struggle. Therefore, she was demoted to a commoner by Emperor Xian (EP's brother and Mrs. Lin's half brother) and later commited suicide. Because of that, the Lin family ill treated ML's mother in fear incurring EX's anger and hatred towards Lin family.

So, in other words, ML and MC can still be regarded as cousins.

Also, in this chapter, EP mentions to ML that she will give the last amulet for MC's family, which is sacrificing herself as a shield for Emperor YQ's assasination. In other words, it can be said that EP already know that there will be assasination towards Emperor YQ.

Also, I happened to read in another chapter that the second prince already know about YQ's action of poisoning MC's grandfather and ML's family.
So, logically, EP will also knows that YQ also takes part in her husband's suffering, which is why she deliberately acts as a shield in the assasination attempt of YQ in order to protect her descendants (MC's family), and I think that is the last amulet she mentions to ML.

How did the Mc and ml get engaged?
What happens to those girls in conflict with the Mc? The prime ministers daughter, the princess and the sisters the ex-fiancé.

The revolting part I don't remember very well but I think yes. They got married and had children, don't remember how many. One time she goes with her children in a treasure hunt and found that a chest is missing(the one that the ML took).
Sorry. Right now I don't remember any of the side characters. Only the relationship between the emperor and the MC's family it's not that great as if seems to be.

Alright I finished the MTL, here're are my spoilers:
- the romance between the ML and FL was good and straightforward, so I'll talk more about the other stuff
- current emperor caused the death of ML's family and FL's grandpa, so he was very nice to them
- FL's family was military before, so when a lot of old soldiers were disabled and abandoned, the FL's family supported them. As a child, FL visited them often and learned martial arts and cursing from them. FL has battlefield sword skills, unlike ML who has pretty sword skills for fitness.
- during an assassination attempt on ML (Chapter 100), FL shows her amazing sword skills and kills off many assassins and saves ML.
- first half of the book is about the ML and FL when they're single. They get married just before the emperor passes away. When the emperor was sick, he tried to hasten their marriage because he realized he was better when they were happy.
- Eunuch Wang De by the emperor is ML's person
- Maid Yunzhu by the FL's side later betrays her
- FL's Grandma had the tiger token! She gives it to the ML before her death
- Second Prince steals the throne and is a despotic murderer. Some counties start a rebellion. He orders the married ML and FL to take an army to fight the rebels. Even if they lose, it's good for him if they will die
- when they get there, ML reveals he has the tiger tally, reveals that the Second Prince had killed the previous Emperor and stolen the throne, and joins the rebels
- With the tiger tally and the FL's military family influence, within 1 year the ML takes the throne
- Empress Dowager remains, Crown Prince gives throne to ML, Crown Prince becomes Qinwang, FL is Empress
- BUT, Crown Princess (eldest Miss Shi) tried to assassinate FL and ML. Crown Prince is a nice guy, but he volunteers to guard the imperial tomb (live in quiet and never return). FL lets Crown Princess live, but gives her life to Shi Jin (Crown Princess' brother) to keep. Crown Princess commits suicide.
- later on, Princess An Le (Crown Prince's sister) also tries to assassinate ML. Empress Dowager joins Crown Prince in seclusion, Princess An Le is sent to isolation, and 300 guards are sent to surround them to keep them from contacting others. ML didn't want to do this, but FL did this to protect him b/c she's so angry they would hurt him.
- FL's Grandma also left a box of secrets in hiding spot that only FL would find. Royal secrets that FL can use to protect herself in the future
- Xi Qilin (fiancee 2 of FL) is sent to outskirts to be an official. He's smartened up. He meets Miss Shi, who sabotaged his engagement with FL, and can finally show her calculating, cruel personality in full, including her attempt to kill the FL on the ice pond when they were little. He helps her get a better job (she was sentenced to hard labour in shackles), but deliberately prevents her from returning to better days.
- Shi Jin (secret admirer of FL) is an official. His dad and sisters are gone, he's very lonely
- Ban Heng marries at age 20, he's a Marquis
- FL's parents are Duke/Duchess, they're good
- FL has a son, very talented
- ML dreams that he's in dream timeline, where FL died 12 years earlier and her family lost its wealth and status and he's on the throne alone, which makes him panic. He wakes up back in timeline with FL Empress next to him.
- throughout the novel there are many instances of the FL being wonderfully arrogant and just and straight dealing with all the villains. She stays pretty much in character the whole time. She is smarter than she appears, like her whole family.

Wow. This novel is very complicated. I have been reading this author's books which is always two extremes. Like books such as Eight Treasures are written very deep with translators putting extra notes but then on the other hand, the comedy books will really have you rolling in laughter such as Times Spend in Pretensed, which do have conflicts but very little and amusing. But wow really, this book took all the good points of the author's two genre and mix it well. I laughed at the Ban family but felt extremely complicated for many characters. Also, while the main family seems to be indeed wastrels and the center of the comedy, them being also the center of many complicated political actions wasn't so farfetch nor illogical.

I can't be too clear as I definitely missed some points through MTL but I'll try my best to answer according to my understanding.

The previous emperor (PE) had two sons who were up for the throne: one was the son of his wife (main wife/empress), the future emperor Yun Qing (YQ); the other was the son of his favored concubine/consort, Huiwang.  Basically, the emperor didn't like his wife and therefore didn't like her child and he went the opposite direction with the favored concubine.  Even though Yun Qing was the crown prince, because PE did not like his mother, and therefore him, he tried to strip YQ of the crown prince title and give it to Huiwang, the favored son.  It's the PE's poor treatment and humiliation of his mother, who is his (main) wife, that causes YQ to make sure he never favors any concubines over his own wife  and that only his oldest son from his wife is groomed for the throne.  His intention is to make it so that his sons will not have to fight each other for the throne when he passes as only one of them will be qualified to inherit; thus, he cultivates the first son but ignores the second which ultimately backfires as the second son's resentment just builds up over time.  When the second prince usurps the throne, one of the first thing he does is have his father tortured (conversely, he treats his mother--who admits to having spoiled him to make up for his father's shortcomings--well and other than possibly being under house arrest (it's not stated explicitly but implied...that is, he doesn't force her to remain in her palace but he does have a lot of guards around it and keeping an eye or her/her palace), her life doesn't really become bad or anything.  She's not starved and the reason the second prince's wife, (XW) survives his reign is because he won't kill her when she's with his mother....and knowing this, his mother has XW live with her.

The current dynasty (the dynasty of PE and emperor YQ) is headed by the Jiang family.

The ML actually descends from a Jiang princess.  A distant grandmother (I can't remember how far removed she was; I want to say it was his great grandmother though) was born a princess of the Jiang family but her family disapproved of her behavior/marriage and crossed her out of the family record, disowning her.  So the ML has royal blood in him but is not officially recognized as part of the royal family.  His mother (I'm gonna just call her Mrs. L) was a noted beauty in her day and YQ was fond of, but not romantically interested/in love with, her.  A good part of the ML's stoicism and likely why he is so willing to indulge the MC's whims from the getgo, before he falls for her, is likely due to how strict and controlling his mother was towards him, not allowing him any semblance of a childhood. The ML is the last living person of his line/family, his mother, father, and older brother having passed away before the story begins.  All three had been poisoned (by YQ) with the same poison; Mrs. L passed away first and then about a year or two later, the ML's father and older brother passed away successively around the same time period.  The ML didn't know until he was older that their deaths were caused by YQ, who feared that their family was becoming too strong/a threat to his power.  He had no proof of them doing anything but had by then become rather paranoid.

One of the reasons the ML is able to survive to adulthood is because he is taken in by the Empress parents, aka, the emperor's in-laws, and raised by them.  He is treated well/as if he is one of them by the Empress' parents and is very fond of them, particularly the grandfather.  The MC notes that this was extremely beneficial to YQ because having lost his family and then essentially being adopted by the emperor's in-laws meant that the ML was basically indebted towards saw the in-laws as family (since they are his in-laws, the emperor is naturally not worried about the empress' family wanting his throne) and he basically had 24 hour spy access to the ML.  I will note that the ML wasn't close to anyone in his biological family--his mother and brother were both noted as being cold/dismissive towards him.  However, his parents did love each other deeply and the ML believes even had his father not been poisoned, he wouldn't have lived much longer as he pretty much lost his will to live after Mrs L passed.

Now, for the MC's grandparents...well, the grandfather was targeted twice by both the PE and later, YQ.  The MC comes from a long line of accomplished military people and her grandfather was particularly revered (its often mentioned that its a pity the MC's grandfather ended up with a useless son and grandson; many also lament that the MC was born a girl bc she clearly took after her grandfather).  As a military commander, the grandpa was normally stationed by the country's borders (I believe the northern border in particular) to fend off against invaders/raiders.  The grandfather himself is not blood related to the royal Jiang family (it's the main character's grandmother who has Jiang blood in her; I don't remember if she was a cousin or sister of the PE though) but had very strong military powers--like, his men were noted as being particularly loyal to him and his influence wasn't just contained at the border he was guarding; his abilities/military prowess/person was admired pretty much universally throughout all the military men (this may be due to both his reputation preceding him and the fact that he was genuinely good and caring towards his men and nurtured his fair share of later military leaders as well).

Anyway, as you can imagine, the PE wasn't too excited about so much influence/power over the military being held by someone else outside himself.  He either planted or was able to manipulate a trusted officer in the camp to sneakily attack and injure the MC's grandfather.  At that point, the grandfather decided it would be best for his family's safety if he resigned from his position and did so.  Naturally, MC's grandparents know who is pulling the strings behind the scene in this matter and YQ also learns this incident while he's still fighting for the throne.  He's actually very embarrassed/ashamed about his father's actions and feels guilty towards his aunt/MC's grandmother.

Anyway, YQ successfully ascends to the throne and at first, all is well.  Gradually, he becomes more like his father in that he becomes paranoid about losing power.  The ML's father was a close friend of his but he was also a well-regarded/influential figure in the capital in his own right so the increasingly paranoid YQ decided he had to go.  The MC's grandfather, despite having retired and basically spending his days with his grandkids, was still very much so a revered and influential person amongst military personnel; though he retired from his position, he still took the MC to visit military barracks and cared for (wounded) veterans (the MC mentions they have a lot of veterans in their estate and the family's guards are noted by many as being particularly talented fighters).  He might not have an official military position but frankly, he doesn't need it because he has the hearts of those in the military and his words/opinions still hold a very heavy weight with the military.  YQ also has the MC's grandfather poisoned though it's not stated whether or not it was the same poison as what was used on the ML's family.  The MC, who was ~10 at the time, thought he was sick; it's not until the ML reveals how his family was poisoned and asks about her grandfather that she thinks back and realizes her grandfather wasn't ill, but poisoned.

As for the relationship/problems between Mrs L and the MC's grandmother?  I'm not sure if the story ever clarifies it.  Certainly their personalities would clash (Mrs L was all about being devout and virtuous, or at least projecting that appearance; the MC's grandma is...well, just look at her son and grandkids...her daughter-in-law is also noted to take no bull and she and her daughter in law get along swimmingly...as in, the MC's father wonders more than once whether or not he is actually the grandmother's blood or if his wife is.  The grandma apologizes for straddling the daughter-in-law with a husband like her son.

That
That's why, I try to ask, in case someone has a better grasp of the story.
To be fair, I really like the story, it's kind of giving a fresh vibe of the characters, especially in their mental state.
But the minus point is that, some interesting parts, such as the YQ's illness and nightmares, MC's father's assassination, etc, are not specifically mentioned who is the real master mind or the reasons.

Well, maybe the author prefers such style of writing, i.e., letting the readers to guess the answers freely.
But honestly, I prefer for an author to mention it in the script so that I don't speculate freely.

Yes, it is. The drama adaptation called A Girl Like Me takes different route from the novel. They change the plot, characters, timeline. I prefer the novel plot that more make sense than the drama plot. The only reason for me to watch until the final episode is Hou Ming Hao, he is so handsome as Rong Xia.
