I Am This Type of Woman

I can't be too clear as I definitely missed some points through MTL but I'll try my best to answer according to my understanding.

The previous emperor (PE) had two sons who were up for the throne: one was the son of his wife (main wife/empress), the future emperor Yun Qing (YQ); the other was the son of his favored concubine/consort, Huiwang.  Basically, the emperor didn't like his wife and therefore didn't like her child and he went the opposite direction with the favored concubine.  Even though Yun Qing was the crown prince, because PE did not like his mother, and therefore him, he tried to strip YQ of the crown prince title and give it to Huiwang, the favored son.  It's the PE's poor treatment and humiliation of his mother, who is his (main) wife, that causes YQ to make sure he never favors any concubines over his own wife  and that only his oldest son from his wife is groomed for the throne.  His intention is to make it so that his sons will not have to fight each other for the throne when he passes as only one of them will be qualified to inherit; thus, he cultivates the first son but ignores the second which ultimately backfires as the second son's resentment just builds up over time.  When the second prince usurps the throne, one of the first thing he does is have his father tortured (conversely, he treats his mother--who admits to having spoiled him to make up for his father's shortcomings--well and other than possibly being under house arrest (it's not stated explicitly but implied...that is, he doesn't force her to remain in her palace but he does have a lot of guards around it and keeping an eye or her/her palace), her life doesn't really become bad or anything.  She's not starved and the reason the second prince's wife, (XW) survives his reign is because he won't kill her when she's with his mother....and knowing this, his mother has XW live with her.

The current dynasty (the dynasty of PE and emperor YQ) is headed by the Jiang family.

The ML actually descends from a Jiang princess.  A distant grandmother (I can't remember how far removed she was; I want to say it was his great grandmother though) was born a princess of the Jiang family but her family disapproved of her behavior/marriage and crossed her out of the family record, disowning her.  So the ML has royal blood in him but is not officially recognized as part of the royal family.  His mother (I'm gonna just call her Mrs. L) was a noted beauty in her day and YQ was fond of, but not romantically interested/in love with, her.  A good part of the ML's stoicism and likely why he is so willing to indulge the MC's whims from the getgo, before he falls for her, is likely due to how strict and controlling his mother was towards him, not allowing him any semblance of a childhood. The ML is the last living person of his line/family, his mother, father, and older brother having passed away before the story begins.  All three had been poisoned (by YQ) with the same poison; Mrs. L passed away first and then about a year or two later, the ML's father and older brother passed away successively around the same time period.  The ML didn't know until he was older that their deaths were caused by YQ, who feared that their family was becoming too strong/a threat to his power.  He had no proof of them doing anything but had by then become rather paranoid.

One of the reasons the ML is able to survive to adulthood is because he is taken in by the Empress parents, aka, the emperor's in-laws, and raised by them.  He is treated well/as if he is one of them by the Empress' parents and is very fond of them, particularly the grandfather.  The MC notes that this was extremely beneficial to YQ because having lost his family and then essentially being adopted by the emperor's in-laws meant that the ML was basically indebted towards saw the in-laws as family (since they are his in-laws, the emperor is naturally not worried about the empress' family wanting his throne) and he basically had 24 hour spy access to the ML.  I will note that the ML wasn't close to anyone in his biological family--his mother and brother were both noted as being cold/dismissive towards him.  However, his parents did love each other deeply and the ML believes even had his father not been poisoned, he wouldn't have lived much longer as he pretty much lost his will to live after Mrs L passed.

Now, for the MC's grandparents...well, the grandfather was targeted twice by both the PE and later, YQ.  The MC comes from a long line of accomplished military people and her grandfather was particularly revered (its often mentioned that its a pity the MC's grandfather ended up with a useless son and grandson; many also lament that the MC was born a girl bc she clearly took after her grandfather).  As a military commander, the grandpa was normally stationed by the country's borders (I believe the northern border in particular) to fend off against invaders/raiders.  The grandfather himself is not blood related to the royal Jiang family (it's the main character's grandmother who has Jiang blood in her; I don't remember if she was a cousin or sister of the PE though) but had very strong military powers--like, his men were noted as being particularly loyal to him and his influence wasn't just contained at the border he was guarding; his abilities/military prowess/person was admired pretty much universally throughout all the military men (this may be due to both his reputation preceding him and the fact that he was genuinely good and caring towards his men and nurtured his fair share of later military leaders as well).

Anyway, as you can imagine, the PE wasn't too excited about so much influence/power over the military being held by someone else outside himself.  He either planted or was able to manipulate a trusted officer in the camp to sneakily attack and injure the MC's grandfather.  At that point, the grandfather decided it would be best for his family's safety if he resigned from his position and did so.  Naturally, MC's grandparents know who is pulling the strings behind the scene in this matter and YQ also learns this incident while he's still fighting for the throne.  He's actually very embarrassed/ashamed about his father's actions and feels guilty towards his aunt/MC's grandmother.

Anyway, YQ successfully ascends to the throne and at first, all is well.  Gradually, he becomes more like his father in that he becomes paranoid about losing power.  The ML's father was a close friend of his but he was also a well-regarded/influential figure in the capital in his own right so the increasingly paranoid YQ decided he had to go.  The MC's grandfather, despite having retired and basically spending his days with his grandkids, was still very much so a revered and influential person amongst military personnel; though he retired from his position, he still took the MC to visit military barracks and cared for (wounded) veterans (the MC mentions they have a lot of veterans in their estate and the family's guards are noted by many as being particularly talented fighters).  He might not have an official military position but frankly, he doesn't need it because he has the hearts of those in the military and his words/opinions still hold a very heavy weight with the military.  YQ also has the MC's grandfather poisoned though it's not stated whether or not it was the same poison as what was used on the ML's family.  The MC, who was ~10 at the time, thought he was sick; it's not until the ML reveals how his family was poisoned and asks about her grandfather that she thinks back and realizes her grandfather wasn't ill, but poisoned.

As for the relationship/problems between Mrs L and the MC's grandmother?  I'm not sure if the story ever clarifies it.  Certainly their personalities would clash (Mrs L was all about being devout and virtuous, or at least projecting that appearance; the MC's grandma is...well, just look at her son and grandkids...her daughter-in-law is also noted to take no bull and she and her daughter in law get along swimmingly...as in, the MC's father wonders more than once whether or not he is actually the grandmother's blood or if his wife is.  The grandma apologizes for straddling the daughter-in-law with a husband like her son.

That
That's why, I try to ask, in case someone has a better grasp of the story.
To be fair, I really like the story, it's kind of giving a fresh vibe of the characters, especially in their mental state.
But the minus point is that, some interesting parts, such as the YQ's illness and nightmares, MC's father's assassination, etc, are not specifically mentioned who is the real master mind or the reasons.

Well, maybe the author prefers such style of writing, i.e., letting the readers to guess the answers freely.
But honestly, I prefer for an author to mention it in the script so that I don't speculate freely.

https://www.novelupdates.com/series/i-am-this-type-of-woman/

A stupid father with good luck, a kick-ass and protective mother, and a dandy younger brother all want a principal husband.

Her engagement has been broken off three times yet she does not panic.

Beautiful and magnificent clothes, golden beams in their house.

She has money, she has power, why would she need a husband?

This is a story about a garish woman who has had her engagement broken off three times and a hypocrite of a man.

Has anyone read this? I would love some spoilers for it.

Yes, it is. The drama adaptation called A Girl Like Me takes different route from the novel. They change the plot, characters, timeline. I prefer the novel plot that more make sense than the drama plot. The only reason for me to watch until the final episode is Hou Ming Hao, he is so handsome as Rong Xia.

No, the rumors come about because of how well the emperor ends up treating the ML, sending many gifts and conferring honor/promotions (new, higher title/rank).  More specifically, it takes root when the emperor gets involved with the ML and MC's wedding planning--as in, he basically decides to arrange the whole thing and does so with a zeal he did not display with either of his own sons' weddings.  He even gifts the MC and ML a palace/piece of property that is highly valuable/desired that he has always refused to let go of in the past, including to his own son.  The property is better than what he gave the second prince to live in.

The emperor isn't just 'spoiling' the ML though--he's also spoiling the MC just as much, if not more.  The reason is that he believes his health/wellness is dependent on making both of them happy as that is the only way their ancestors (well, ML's dad and MC's grandpa) won't haunt him at night.  Initially, it was believed the ML was just benefiting from being engaged to the MC, who the emperor has long been known to dote upon.  However, since his stroke, the emperor had been having nightmares involving the ML's father and MC's grandfather every night and he suffered a relapse health-wise after several days of recovery after he has the ML (and another official) beaten with the board following an incident where the crown prince (who he tasked a group including the two beaten officials) was discovered alone in a room with one of his (YQ) concubines.  This was actually arranged by the second prince to take over the duties of overseeing the country that had been handed to the crown prince.   One night after another nightmare (before all the spoiling really began for the ML), he has someone tell the ML to paint a picture of the door guardians (I think, I'm unsure and am to look up MTL right now) and copy some scripture/scroll for him.  The ML finishes the painting first and soon sends it over and the emperor has the paintings posted on the doors to his bedchambers.  At the same time, he gets a scented sachet that he is told was sent and personally (poorly) embroidered by the MC (in truth, she has no idea.  The ML sent it saying it was from her) and he places the sachet under his pillow.  That night, he sleeps without any nightmares or disturbances that wakes him in the middle of the night (it's the first time he's slept through the night and had no nightmares at least since he initially became ill and suffered a stroke).  This convinces him that as long as he treats the ML and MC well and make them happy, their ancestors (namely, ML's dad and MC's grandfather) will leave him alone and that his recovery will depend on their happiness.  So he starts sending them a lot of good things and does so often---like, at least for the MC, it's a near daily basis.

That would be fine except that one night, YQ is startled awake after a nightmare/restless sleep to discover the paintings on the door by the ML has been torn off and the sachet from the 'MC' is missing.  He calls both of them to him as early as feasible and has them replace the items (the MC by this time knows the ML sent something he credited as being from her; its probably fortunate the ML was aware she sucks at embroidery) on the spot and ends up sleeping peacefully that night once again.  That cements his belief that his health and recovery, as well as peace of mind, is dependent on making the ML and MC happy.  Naturally, this means he sends out even more good stuff.

Mind you, the second prince is watching all this with gritted teeth.

At some point, YQ has the ML brought into his room to ask after his and the MC's wedding plans as he believes something as joyous as a wedding will definitely appease the ghosts of the MC;s grandpa and ML's dad.  The ML tells him they are planning it for the following year as he was told there was an auspicious date in February (side note: the monk/person actually warned against marrying the MC as her fortune foretold  her likely dying within a few years).  The emperor isn't happy with the date and has someone come find a new auspicious date that is closer to the present and then lets them know he's going to let them marry in Dec instead.  He very excitedly sets about with wedding stuff and gifts, sending both ML and MC even more good things and a ton of them AND gifts them a palace as a gift as well.  Now, it's pretty rare to set aside a royal property for non-royal members (I get the impression with him, it's rare with extended royalty as well) and this palace has been sought after by many but he's never agreed for anyone to have/stay in it so it shocks a bunch of people, including the empress and other family members, when he decides to give it away to the MC and ML without them asking or mentioning it.  The second prince is basically leaking jealousy all over the place now as his father wasn't willing to give him such good property when he asked.  He gets rebuked by YQ when he complains as well and it's then that he starts suspecting the ML is the emperor's illegitimate son and, naturally, other do as well.

After all, why else would the emperor lavish the ML with gifts/honor and treat him so well?  And hasn't the emperor always praised the ML?

Funnily enough, people more readily accept the rumor as true instead of the actual truth and the few times the ML is asked about it, he has to work to convince the other party is not the the emperor's illegitimate son.   YQ, meanwhile, pretty much just snorts and thinks, "I wish he was my son!  If only one of my sons was as competent as him..."

ETA:

As for your later post, I will go back to skim through the relevant chapters but I think there was a bigger gap in relation between the ML's side and the MC's.  But MTL is harsh on the brain.  But the amulet(s) she's speaking of are, I believe, the three military tokens that gives the ML authority to command various military groups.  It was said to be lost after the MC's grandfather resigned from his post.

I also suspected the grandmother knew about the attempted assassination ahead of time and initially thought she might have planned it.  Anyway, I believe she purposely got in the way to protect the MC and her family as the grandmother was ill and knew she was dying anyway.  Why not get some benefits for her family if she's gonna go, right?

But yes, the grandmother did know about her hubby being poisoned by the emperor.  Grandma has a wide information network apparently as her last 'gift' to the MC, as a final form of protection, is basically a book of all the dirty secrets she knows about every noble family in the capital...MC was surprised to find it but considers it a last resort...meanwhile, the ML, the emperor by the time he learns about this book, is amazed and probably a bit worshipful towards Grandma...

I felt I should point out the ML did not actually plan on becoming emperor in either timelines.  Though he wants revenge against YQ, the crown prince who is being groomed as the next emperor very much so values the ML (he's actually the one who suggests the ML become the new emperor following the successful rebellion) and that the ML is on good terms with him.  The ML is being groomed to be the crown prince's right hand/close advisor when the prince ascends the throne.  The ML also has no problems with the empress and is particularly close to her parents.

His revenge was simply to kill YQ which he did.  YQ's closest servant/eunuch is actually one of the ML's people.  He knowingly gives YQ "medicine" from the second prince that is either poison or has been poisoned.  He gets called out on this by the second prince, of all people.
On another note, YQ is a complicated character.  For all his paranoia/faults, he is conflicted/haunted by his actions towards the ML's father and MC's grandfather.  When he's ill/bedridden, they are the only two people "haunting" him--that is, he only has nightmares about the two of them, despite the fact that he has definitely had others killed, including his brother.  He genuinely cares for and regrets wronging the MC's grandmother though that doesn't stop him from killing her husband and being willing to do whatever it takes to continue holding on to his power.  His last words are asking the MC for forgiveness and also apologizing (though to whom, the MC and/or ML, or MC's grandpa and ML's father isn't made clear).  Granted it's too little too late but once he falls ill, it becomes clear that though he (needlessly) killed the MC's grandfather and the ML's father who were both his allies, it haunts his conscience.

He also genuinely cares for the MC and her family as he finds them to be the only people who are genuinely good to him without ulterior motives.  Though this doesn't prevent him from acting selfishly, they are probably the only people in the capital whose "disobedience" (ie:sending doctors to treat someone he had beaten as punishment/who fell out of his favor) towards him is not only tolerated, but makes him laugh and think better of them.   His last edict/decree, written when he was incredibly sick and thought he wouldn't make it, was one which conferred a title on her which would in turn provide protection against others who would seek to make trouble for her and her family once he is not around to protect them.  Even if his sons disagreed (its unlikely the crown prince would have disagreed given how much he liked his cousin/the MC), they would still have to follow it.  He has his trusted eunuch (aka the one whose secretly aligned with the ML) hold onto it with instructions not to take it out unless he passes away.

Thank you so much for the spoiler.
Can you spoil in detail about the past grudges among Previous Emperor (Yun Qing's father), Emperor Yun Qing, MC's grandparents, and ML's parents?
Because I'm quite confused of who is the real mastermind of the suffering of MC' grandfather, the relationship of Emperor Yun Qing and ML's mother, also about the grudge between MC's grandmother and ML's mother.
I'd like to thank you beforehand.

I see, thank you so much for the spoiler, though the reason of the ML's mother's hate towards MC's grandmother is not clearly stated.
Or rather, as I also read though google translate (GT), so it's not quite clear what is the exact point of the part which mentions about MC's mother (chapter 53).
I mean, because I read though GT, the exact relationship is not clear (e.g. aunt, cousin, nephew, uncle, etc), which leads to confusion of the relationship among each characters and failure to grasp the better understanding of the story.
Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your comprehension.
