He didn't "forget about them", he just decided to value saving Casca(his aforementioned lover) over killing Griffith. His inner conflict has been THE the central plot point since volume 14 to this point(see especially volumes 30 through 33). I think the release date gets people confused on prior content, but they have discussed this over and over constantly for more than 250 chapters by now. It's *the* main plotpoint overall aside from Griffith, by this point and Elfheim is the culmination.
