I saw that coming. Once Urasawa reminded us of apartment number 606 and the events of that drunken reunion night, I automatically suspected Fukube to be under that mask. However, I've read too much Urasawa. This does not necessarily imply Fukube is "Friend." There's still more rabbit-hole jumping to come. Volume 12 was definitely the best of the series thus far.

What? He was supposedly dead at the "2000 showdown", he jumped off the roof w/ the "fake friend" and "died" ... The proof, while subtle would be A) Why did he do that? It was stupid to just go through all of that if you were going to kill the real friend why not just shoot him from across the fence instead? Since he decided it wasn't worth trying to recover the "remote" by that point .... and B) They never confirmed his death.

Then there were a string of other hints including things like while in the virtual world the person who was friend was the person telling the Sadikiyo that he would "kill him if he told anyone about this"

The reveal was good. Although we realize that from the apartment scene with Maruo several chapters back. But wait why the hell is the big bad going into a room full of enemies alone. Yamane shooting him maybe surprised him, but Shogun is there as well. He could easily kill him. That was so dumb. Oh also why the hell is no one talking about that point. So shocking he died? Do you guys not care about the logic of what's happening?

i wonder if they'll "revive" him like they did back in 2000 and in 1971 (that's what it sounds like they did seeing as yamane said he was "born"/"died" then and said the event in modern times is a repeat)

although i have to wonder who would try to kill him in 1971? he was just a little boy then. did sadakiyo? did yamane?

After chapter 131 it wasn't that surprising, but still, wow,it was really Fukubei.

Need an explanation what happened 2000,when he supposedly fell from the building.

Onii-nyan said:
I was 99% certain he's "friend" because of two flashbacks, if I remember correctly one was from SadaKiyo's POV and the other one was from Fukubei's POV, summarising:

1. SadaKiyo snuck into Kenji's secret base and said that that's where he met "Friend" reading The Prophecy Book by himself, and "Friend" invited him to read it together and keep it a secret from the others

2. Fukubei snuck into the secret base to read their Prophecy Book, while he was reading it SadaKiyo also tried to snuck in, so he invited him to read it together and keep it a secret from the others

These two are one and the same event told from 2 points of view.

It was so obvious it still left me with that 1% of uncertainty

Finally someone noticed

I had all kinds of crazy theories like Kenji (which made absolutely no sense if you think about it) but for it to be him is definitely a shock. Where the hell is the story going now? There's still 100 plus chapters left.

Brilliantly handled twist. You could put the pieces together from several chapters ago and it still adds up. Became a lot more obvious in recent chapters but considering we have around 120 chapters I'm super excited to see where the story is going to go.

Finally, the reveal.. since the very first time we met Fukubei, he was my prime suspect.. the way he told his story to Kenji, the way he acted on the roof & my strongest lead to him being "Friend", when Marou tried to check on Fukubei body after his struggle & fall with fake "Friend" on the roof.. Kenji stopped Marou from checking the body...

Which also made Kenji my second suspect of being a "Friend" too.. but that doesn't make sense at all.. other than that moment which can be took as Kenji really in a hurry to save the world or to hide major lead for "Friend" identity...

I really like the thrilling part of revealing the mystery of "Friend" identity but the selective parts of remembering/forgetting important memories were eye-rolling (in annoying way)...

I don't think Fukubei's death is the end of "Friend".. there must be more to it! i don't know how with 100+ chapters left.. but i have a hunch..

It was pretty much confirmed that Fukube was friend. Even before this chapter. First of all his death was too suspicious, like if he wanted he could have shot "fake friend" on the bloody new years's eve. But just wasted time by saying all of that useless bullshit. And they never confirmed his death. But what really confirmed it for me was the virtual attraction thing. Where Sadakiyo's friend told him "I'll kill you, if u tell anyone about this". And later Sadakiyo, said that "friend" was always angry with him, and told him that he couldn't do anything without "friend". Also (kid)Fukube in the flashback and the kid who said he felt bad for collins in the flashback(flag on the moon ch), wore the exact same clothes. And fukube said that he invited Sadakiyo to the secret base, And from Sadakiyo's pov we see that the one who invited him(fukube) into the secret base is "friend". So this is a bit anti-climatic for me. Maybe Fukube is just a pawn. But I have no doubt that he is indeed Kanna's father.
