lol death.... is... cheap... In the end kubo just couldn't kill off either of his two favorite characters. I wonder if byakuya doesn't recover will rukia become head of the clan? Also i hope kenpachi's defeat will lead to yachiru finally entering battle. She seems to have alot of hidden power but just chooses not to fight. For all we know she might be the 12th kenpachi but just hasn't fully developed yet.

Kenpachi will most likely regain powers, but Byakuya I really doubt it.

The broken sword of yamaji represents the physical damage to SS.

Byakuya never being able to be himself again represents the psychological and metaphysical damage to SS, so I guess its VERY likely direction - Rukia taking over the Kuchiki family head role and Byakuya spending time as a normal soul in a wheelchair - cue angst, angst, angst.

Hence Kenpachi, Yamaji's Sword, Byakuya, etc are relics to remind of this conflict(hence the character title)

WAAAY way back when Hanataro first appeared he made cear that almost none of the medic unit use Zanpakutou, with the exception of captain and vice-captain.

Ok, I believe you, I am too lazy to check that*. BUT x) the combat medics unit might've been created from the group of warriors(hence name "combat" medics) who handle kidou well - for example Kira handled Matsumoto's ripped parts of her body(basically half of the stomach). Such unit could be deployed when most of the attackers after defeating their opponents rushed to assault Yamamoto. Then medics could reach those defeated ones. Imagine how crucial was lack of immediate help on the Byakuya's part.

*But if I remember Hanatarou's zanpakutou was pretty powerful when its meter was full, like one-time getsuga tenshou. Even if they don't use their zanpakutou doesn't mean they don't have them, they were trained, like you see in the modern warfare when medics don't carry heavy weapons but some handguns.

I think that was a filler (that I had the bad luck of watching)

Still, we aggree that there this war wasn't depicted absolutely correctly. At least the story progresses. So let's see.

@PirateKinz

You are wrong on this one. He got sliced in half and the got shot by a barrage of Quincy arrows that turnd him to dust. His body is not "missing" for the reader, it's missing for the rest of his soldiers who wren't present during his death

I think combat medics receive/treat wounded only after a battle or if called. They aren't supposed to participate in the fighting and priority is the protection of the patients

Gonna have to look it up.

But you'd think there'd be a medic near the squads...

And I saw Hanataro!

Of course they're still alive. You guys didn't actually believe Tite would kill them, did you?
