Uhmmm... This theory existed AFTER the shogun arc. See the screenshots.



And there's no utsuro before the shogun arc. What are you talking about?



And if you accepted the theory that Shouyou was actually a part of Naraku, how that Shouyou being the LEADER of Naraku that far fetched?

Sorry, I guess I was too brief and some things weren't clear.



I meant to say I've seen people theorize that Shoyo might be former Naraku before Shogun arc started; less people probably and the theory had a lot less evidence going for it so it had less traction. But after the Courtesan arc I've seen people speculate about why Shoyo got captured by Naraku in the first place and how Oboro might have been personally acquainted with him before that etc, and one of the ideas floating around was that he used to be one of them.



So after Shogun arc where it was clearly hinted that Shoyo lived a less than upstanding life and had a lot to feel repentant about, the fact that he used to be an assassin for Naraku sounded plausible and interesting to me.



Why am I not into Utsuro if Shoyo being Naraku was interesting to me? Well. As I see it there's a lot of differences between the two scenarios. In the letter situation Shoyo would be just a human with an unfortunate life who decided one day to walk away from it all and he took some troubled kids under his wing and he learned something from them and they learned something from him; he met an early demise but despite everything he died satisfied with his life and with trust in the people he left behind. Nice poignant human drama imo. In the former, he's just a temporary alternate personality of fantastical immortal monster ("Your master Yoshida Shoyo was just a momentary smile made by Utsuro in his 500 years of bloodstained history"). The significance of those few years changes.  There's a big difference and it completely changes the character and context surrounding him (i.e. all his relationships with other characters etc). Shoyo as a character becomes just a puzzle piece in another character's long life and considering his importance to the central plot and themes of Gintama so far pulling a thing like this right now feels off to me. It reminds me of all the times an "everything you love was a lie" twist like this was done in other Jump manga and it never ended well. So yeah, it's not really that impossible to like one option and dislike the other.



Anyway I'm waiting for this week's chapter to see if my feelings change or not. I still love Gintama, so I'm not gonna be flippant about it and just say it's "ruined forever!!" and dump it.

Hey at least, the whole "aliens-invading-the-earth" setting has been fully utilized now. We have been reading this manga for a long time and maybe some of us just forgot that this manga has a weird setting where Sorachi could make anything happen and you can't do anything about it because the main plot still follows the setting. And as you know, this is not a shitty asspull because if you recall, this has been foreshadowed back in the courtesan of nation arc and shogun assasination arc.



Let's just see what Sorachi's gonna do next.

So Utsuro's immortal... I-I see... o.o



Gintoki vs Utsuro as one of the final fights seems very likely. Wonder how Utsuro will die though?

Too be honest, I wasn't a fan of this chapter. In the beginning it felt too cliche and I didn't want it to take that path. But reading this made everything change for me. Everything has become clear about and I see how Sorachi is going to take this. That was a very enlightening explanation connecting all the chapters, thanks for that link.

dat cliche. ugh. lets hope not going more cliche than this.

Shouyou is Illuminati confirmed. Man, this was some real mind f*ck! Though I have to give credit to Sorachi for bringing the energy in the earth storyline to support Utsuro's existence.

Usually Gintama ends up 8th place or so in weekly chapter ratings but this chapter upset a ton of people. I wonder if Sorachi regrets doing this.



He might. But, do you really think that Sorachi would pull something like this without something up his sleeve? Come on, give the man some credit. He's the gorilla that created GINTAMA. Have some faith people

Not only Utsuro turn out to be the same person who was the sensei of Gintoki, he's a 500 year old immortal? What the fuck?

Apparently people don't die when they are killed.

Just why go this way Sorachi wtf, now its pretty much confirmed that Utsuro/Shouyo is the final boss, and we're scheduled to get a cliche shounen ending (master vs students clash)



Come on now and things were going so well, still will wait for official translation.

Like some people say here, Its way too soon to critise this twist and new plot as cliche. Gorilla sensei IS still smart and not stupid like all other shounen mangaka, and I believe we will found out a more deeper meaning to all of this new shocking information.

-The Tendoushuu discovered this energy that planets naturally create called "Altana". Or "Ryumyaku" (as it is known in Edo.)

-Shinpachi mentions that he remembers Ane and Mone mentioning that it's an energy the Amanto harnessed to use in the terminal as a transporter.

-The Tendoushuu came into formation as a group who is in charge of how "Altana" is used.

-They basically started mining planets like parasites to get more Altana.

- I don't see anything mentioning Sadaharu, but Nobume does mention the holes, and how miraculous things would happen around them, like forests sprouting out of nowhere, rivers rushing through, and people's illnesses being cured.

-For one reason or another, Utsuhoyou did defect from the Naraku and they went to look for him to punish him as a traitor, and that's when they found him as a teacher.
