I have even more respect for Gintoki now. He followed through with his Sensei’s wishes even though it was excruciatingly painful for him to do so. Shouyou Sensei had placed him with the responsibility of protecting his comrades, and Gintoki didn’t go against that. If Gintoki had refused to kill Shouyou, then Shouyou would have probably committed seppuku. Shouyou cherished his students, and without them, he would have no purpose in life. A teacher can’t teach when he has lost his students. A teacher can’t appreciate the growth and accomplishments of his students when they have passed on at an early age. He would have felt like a failure if his students had died before him for his sake. Gintoki was aware of all of this, which is why he chose to do what he did.
