Genshiken Chapter 86 Discussion

Interesting. Reading 'Second Season' I initially thought Hato's arc was going to be some kind of trans rites of passage, but it actually ended up a tale about someone's hobby turning into a disruptive addiction making them confuse reality and fantasy. Bit incoherent writing, but fun shenanigans anyway.

Damn you Hato, lucky bastard haha.

And i don't think he will stop cross-dressing just like that.

Madarame must only be with Saki!!!!!!

I hope he won't quit just like this, because, as Bakaboy said, it seems like something that is really something of his character, and you can't really get rid of a part of your personality like that.

But I liked the chapter, though. And I'm still rooting for Sue!

The story really took an interesting turn here.

I mean even if Hato keep crossdressing and eventually liking Madarame.. It's ok

Maybe he's taking a right choice?

It's obvious that he won't stop crossdressing or BL. Maybe he thinks that doing that stuff will make him get obsessed with Madarame, and will make him hurt. I will prefer Hato to be a crossdresser and being straight, instead of the always stereotype "transsexual means gay".

I have to agree Hato's crossplaying days are not over, but the question of his sexuality remains. If one prescribes to the preference theory, than he is choosing (for now) to be entirely hetero. If one prescribes to the theory that there is a sliding scale of sexuality between the 100% hetero and 100% homo extremes than perhaps Hato is just finding his place in the scale, and this is part of the process. If one prescribes to the orientation theory, and believe Hato to be homo/transexual than Hato is only suppressing his true sexual urges. If one prescribes to the orientation theory, and believe Hato to be bisexual, than he is just not into Mada', right now.

Yet this creates a new possible ship of a Hato x Yoshitake 'ship, and other possibilities.



What of Sue? As others said it is difficult to interpret what her own feelings are. This chapter is one of the few times that I can recall where we have been able to read Sue's internal dialogue. Does she like Mada' herself (something I am leaning towards)? Does she prescribe to the Mada' x Hato 'ship as the OTP? Does she feel that her kiss of Mada' is the reason that Mada' x Saki ship is not a possible reality?



Another questions are:

*although Saki turned him down now, does this 100% exclude a Mada' x Saki ship in the future?

*What of income? How long can Mada afford to live without income coming in?

*How will that Genshiken circle dynamic change with three men and four women in the room?

*How will male Hato be different than female Hato?



We shall have to wait and see.

I have to say this was not rly one of my fav chapters.

Not that I'm into cross-dressing or BL, but Hato's sudden change to quit both rly seems kinda a cop-out for his character (plus it sends a bad message to any readers out there that may have been like Hato in those regards/hobbies and that a change like that is for the better)

I'm glad that Hato was able to differentiate between fantasy and reality and not force himself onto Madarame.

And then there's Sue, who was and still remains quite confusing to figure out, esp. her reasoning for sometimes being so awkward/blushy around Madarame in recent chapters.  I think the author could've come up with a better explanation/logic for Sue in regards to her past interactions with Madarame.

Overall, I didn't like it, but maybe we'll see more interaction/chemistry between Hato and Yajima from now on...
