I gave this chapter a 4/5 however.
The chapter felt lackluster for a number of reasons.
Pros: The foreshadowed deathflag of the "senseicharacter " finally paid off.
Makarov will most likely stay dead.
Cons: Here comes the execution into play, which was bad. His death felt really forced.
- Why does he sacrifice himself now, all of sudden. There had been countless opportunities for him to utilize Fairy Law before, including during this war, it feels out of place.
- Mavis character has been consistenly damaged throughout the story, her qualities as a tactician have been proven to be lackluster at best from all the development she had on that subject. Either we never received any details how her tactics worked while during the one display were we learned about them,(during the GMG )it wasn´t anything impressive.
"Laxus is the only one who can absorb lightning“ was one of Mavis brilliant tactics!
-Why does Fairy Law all of sudden get a new rule? A magic that shoves away one´s lifeforce. That´s all nice and dandy considering how broken the spell is. A drawback of this magnitude balances it out significantly, but it was only estatblished this chapter.
Why was such crucial information like this witheld throughout the manga?
It gave the audience no breathing room to be prepared for this momment.
- After being trolled three times in a row with Makarov´s death, this feels more then underwhelming for him in comparision to other Shounen Grandpas. It fits perfect thematically, but Hiro Mashima had announced this three times now. It doesn´t feel like a sacrifice anymore since long time readers of FT had been used to him trying to sacrifice himself just to be stopped by someone.
