Well,Mashima kept saying on the volume notes that he wanted to explain each character's back-story,and so he has been doing that before the GMG arc,where each arc had some character back-story shown.Then after we got some development on a bunch of characters we're getting more on the plot itself.But the plot has already been foreshadowed a long time ago on several times(normally between the arcs).
The reason we had Acnologia attack FT back then was to show how much the mains will have to evolve to be able to beat one of the main villains(if not the main villain) of the series.That kind of stuff.
Not to mention that EVERY arc has been directly connected to dragons or Zeref in one way or the other
Just because main characters were not "tackling" the main plot and instead had to deal with consequences of the main plot, it doe snot mean that that plot was not there.
Yeah,the plot has always been there.If the characters were tackling the main plot right away,FT would have ended already.That's why it's the main plot,it's supposed to lead to the end of the manga,so you can't just have everything right away.

Yeah,i'm pretty sure it's just the explanation of the whole thing from Dios(which is probably wrong) and probably the stellar mage involvement in everything.
