Three Shades of the Rogue Luna

<p>This manga may be titled "Code Geass," but it bears little resemblance to the anime. I understand it's an alternate story, yet my love for the original series makes it hard for me to accept the changes they've introduced, especially the character transformations. It simply doesn't make sense to me, and the historical references feel... off. The only positive aspects were the charming flashbacks, and it was intriguing to see Nunnally as a central character.</p>

Normally I tend to write detailed reviews, but speaking as someone who hasn't explored the entire Code Geass universe, all I can say is that there are numerous elements in this side story that make it feel like a rushed and inferior adaptation.  
Nothing truly horrifying, yet when a work fails to live up to its predecessors while still trying to be part of the same universe, certain aspects only amplify the disappointment.  

However, if you're wondering why my personal rating for Nunnally is 10, while the overall rating is 3, it's because I read the heartfelt letter from the creator during the final chapter. It was so sincere... I couldn't rate their effort, which aimed for a masterpiece and nearly succeeded, lower than a 10 just because their vision didn't align with mine. On the other hand, reviews are meant for those who are "curious" about a work, so I don't feel right averaging my two ratings. You really have to endure until the very end for that final message to profoundly impact your perception of this manga.

Being a massive Code Geass enthusiast, I embarked on reading Code Geass: Nightmare of Nunnally for the same reason many others likely did—to explore what kind of alternate narrative it might present. Initially, I pondered whether this manga continued the anime's storyline, leaving no time to hesitate before diving in.  

The story revolves entirely around Nunnally and her actions. It begins when she enters into a Geass contract with Nemo, granting her the ability to foresee the future. From there, the plot focuses on her battles against the Irregulars. However, the story lacks tension; the mecha fights are rather dull, and while numerous events occur, nothing truly significant happens. Why is this? Simply put, Lelouch is nearly absent. I felt like Zero had zero intelligence. Despite this, I found some charm in this "good-for-nothing" tale, primarily because I enjoyed seeing Nunnally "in action"—fighting, crying, and undertaking actions that were impossible for her in the anime. Essentially, this manga offers a unique opportunity to discover a new side of Nunnally. Although the story isn't overly impressive, I consider it an intriguing alternative to the original.

Character development was solid, and with fewer secondary characters, the focus remains firmly on the protagonist. In contrast to the anime, where Nunnally is more passive, here she undergoes a transformation and must confront numerous challenges to create her vision of a "kind and gentle world." For instance, who would have imagined Nunnally, that sensitive and fragile young girl, engaging in combat against the Irregulars? Alice also plays a pivotal role, aiding Nunnally in dire situations. I genuinely thought Nunnally would open the Heaven's Door before Alice arrived to stop her. Regarding other characters, Nemo exhibited a dark personality, and the Irregulars as a whole were an interesting topic. As for the cell transplants involving C.C., the subject wasn't explored in much detail.

Even if you're a CLAMP aficionado, this new art style shouldn't pose too much of an issue. In reality, the differences aren't substantial. The mecha design remains somewhat similar, and while the character designs have changed, they haven't taken a wrong turn. Admittedly, I wasn't fond of the new Zero outfit, that oversized suit, but I reminded myself that Lelouch still resides within, so it didn't bother me excessively. Art, after all, is subjective and depends on individual taste.

In conclusion, Code Geass: Nightmare of Nunnally is an engaging and enjoyable manga. It lacks comedic or romantic elements, but the action, fighting spirit, and Nunnally's innocence ensure a pleasant reading experience. I believe this manga has a significant disadvantage as it can be easily misunderstood. Many readers approach Code Geass: Nightmare of Nunnally with high expectations due to its association with the popular Code Geass series. Starting with such anticipation often leads to disappointment. Concerning the last page, Tomomasa's confession struck me as a misstep. If you're writing a manga and then admit it was a failure, what kind of expectations do you leave readers with? What interpretations should they draw?

Ultimately, I recommend this manga to everyone, especially Code Geass fans. Even though the story diverges significantly, you'll encounter an interesting narrative with a transformed Nunnally, performing feats unimaginable in the anime. Though Lelouch's intellect is absent, Nunnally's innocence and perseverance shine through.

Not going to lie..  I cannot stop reading & rereading this one. I would love to see it in print and front & center on my bookshelf one day.

Thoroughly enjoying this, well written and the storyline has me hooked with it's originality and surprising twists. Highly recommend this, I can't wait to see what happens. I appreciate that it's updated regularly too (I know that can be hard), I can be a harsh critic but this is really well done
