It’s a typical VRMMO story. I do appreciate that there’s actual balance; there’s no significant power gap between players. However, like every hyper-realistic VRMMO story, it has its fair share of plot holes, but I’ll overlook those because it’s ultimately a casual, healing story.
Regarding my rating, this novel isn’t a masterpiece, nor does it bring anything new to the table. But as a simple, casual healing story, if it serves its ‘healing’ purpose, I would be happy to give it a 4-4.5. The issue is that the story wasn’t entirely healing for me.
A cute, kindhearted, and mature protagonist having fun in a VR game with fluffy partners, cooking, and fighting monsters—this setup is perfect for an enjoyable, heartwarming story. Unfortunately, the kindhearted aspect is taken too far. She’s too much of a pushover; she can’t say no to even normal requests. While these actions often benefit her in the end, she doesn’t seem to particularly enjoy them. Moreover, she doesn’t express her own desires, so other characters keep dragging her into not-so-fun labor. If the author had shown her enjoying these tasks or feeling satisfied after completing them, I might have overlooked this. Sadly, none of that is portrayed.
So, I’ve taken off a star, but I will continue reading and sincerely hope there will be moments that allow me to bump it back up.
To elaborate:
The main character’s real-life situation is atypical of most VRMMO novels, which directly influences her actions, behavior, way of thinking, and knowledge about games, as well as her starting stats.
Secondly, "Mebius World Online" is the first game the main character has ever played.
Lastly, many of the plot devices that might seem like standard VRMMO tropes actually have a basis in the game’s world development and implementation, which is mostly revealed around Chapters 50 and 51.
Miscellaneous:
- There doesn’t seem to be room for any romance plot involving the protagonist.
- The author appears to be woefully unaware of how the development, testing, and release of games (or software in general) work in reality, but this isn’t too much of an issue beyond the prologue.
Lastly, one of the early spoilers:
**Spoiler**
The main character/protagonist, Maria (Mari Aki offline), was in a coma for multiple years and is undergoing physical therapy. This directly affects her character's stats because the game system, which uses technology originally developed for medical purposes, bases the player characters’ starting stats on a full-body scan of the players.
