Popular Reviews
- Story: It begins a little clichéd (an attractive young woman roped into being a pretend concubine/wife for attractive young royalty), but it evolves significantly after that. I appreciated how the female protagonist, Shuurei, didn't fall for the king right away and actually removed herself from the situation once she achieved her initial goals. The story strikes a good balance between action, politics, Shuurei's personal ambitions, and her relationships with those around her. The pacing of the series also felt just right.
- Art: While the art wasn't mind-blowing, it was certainly above average, with careful attention to detail and beautifully rendered backgrounds that greatly enhanced the overall atmosphere of the manga.
- Characters: I adore strong-willed female characters with their own agendas, and Shuurei fits this description perfectly. She has clear visions for her future and, while she receives plenty of assistance along the way, she plays a crucial role in making her dreams come true. Moreover, she doesn't abandon her personal goals due to discrimination, hardship, or the romantic pursuits of the men around her. If you're a fan of such characters, I highly recommend this manga just for her. The narrative does develop into a reverse harem, which isn't my favorite trope, but the male characters involved aren't overly exaggerated or ridiculous. They still serve meaningful purposes in the story beyond being love interests for the female lead.
- Enjoyment: This was an enjoyable read—serious at times but generally light-hearted without being frivolous. It maintained a great balance between plot and character development. If you enjoy manga like Akagame no Shirayukihime or Akatsuki no Yona, I would definitely suggest giving this one a try as well.
Not a romance, but more of a fairly light-hearted drama manga. Features a large cast of likeable characters and an engaging plot; I recommend it to anyone seeking something slightly more serious than the average shoujo manga.
Description
Set in the fictional medieval empire of Saiunkoku, the story follows Shuurei Kou, a descendant of a noble family that has fallen on hard times. Her father serves as a librarian in the Imperial palace, a position that offers prestige and respect but little financial reward. Shuurei teaches at a temple school and takes on odd jobs to make ends meet, all while dreaming of passing the imperial examinations and securing a post in government—a path traditionally forbidden to women. Shuurei's plans are unexpectedly derailed when the Emperor's Grand Advisor proposes an extraordinary offer: join the imperial household for six months as the young Emperor's consort and teach him to become a responsible ruler. Success would bring significant financial rewards. The narrative delves into Shuurei's evolving relationships with the Emperor and other court members, the political intrigues surrounding the imperial court, and her unwavering commitment to self-improvement and her country.
Story: 8/10
While the manga’s synopsis might initially seem trope-filled, it quickly moves beyond these clichés. In reality, the manga is not a romance and lacks any significant romantic subplots or relationships by its conclusion. This shift works well because what emerges is far more intriguing. The central plot—about the protagonist rising above peer prejudice to prove their worth—is somewhat clichéd, yet it avoids falling into the Mary Sue trap through clever writing and remains highly enjoyable. The complexity of the story surpassed my expectations based on the initial shoujo romance premise.
I was pleasantly surprised by how seriously the manga tackles certain issues. To clarify, this remains primarily a light-hearted tale with humorous characters, yet it doesn’t shy away from darker themes such as assassination attempts and corruption. Despite these elements, the manga maintains a balance, ensuring it isn't bogged down in melodrama and allowing ample room for fun and comedy.
The manga consistently evolves: new characters are introduced or removed, gradually expanding the ensemble cast. We also gain fresh insights that recontextualize character relationships and deepen our understanding of the political backdrop.
The setting mirrors ancient China closely, with the author showing little interest in deviating from this template, resulting in minimal world-building. For some, this lack of originality might be a drawback, but I found the story compelling enough that the setting didn’t detract from my enjoyment.
My primary grievance lies in the abrupt ending. While there is technically a conclusion, it feels unsatisfying, akin to being cut off just as the main course begins. It turns out the manga was canceled before it could cover the content of the untranslated light novels upon which it is based, which continue far beyond where the manga adaptation concludes. What a shame. Had I known this beforehand, I might have hesitated to read the manga, knowing I’d never experience its deserved conclusion. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey while it lasted.
Characters: 8/10
Shuurei shines as the manga's star, embodying the qualities of a singularly driven and self-possessed female character, a rarity even in shoujo mangas marketed as romances. She knows precisely what she wants and nothing—not assassination attempts, discrimination, or romantic pursuits—will deter her. Despite her ambition, she remains relatable, likable, and characterized by a pleasant personality and quiet determination. I appreciate how the manga emphasizes that she doesn’t need to forsake her femininity to be strong.
The extensive secondary cast occasionally veers into absurdity with exaggerated quirks but generally consists of grounded individuals. Given the number of attractive young men present, I anticipated a reverse-harem dynamic. However, only one major character expresses romantic feelings toward Shuurei. The others are granted depth beyond mere romance or ties to the protagonist. While Shuurei drives the narrative as expected from the lead, it’s clear that everyone harbors their own agendas, motivated by personal ideals and goals that may align or clash.
Art
The artwork is quite impressive, with detailed backgrounds that breathe life into the world. Character designs are solid but suffer slightly due to many people dressing similarly and sharing similar facial features and hairstyles, leading to potential confusion among characters.
Overall: 8/10
Great characters, great plot—what’s not to love? I highly recommend this manga to those seeking a strong female lead focused on more than romance. If only the adaptation had covered the entire light novel series…
