Story: A woman, an exceptionally beautiful one, is tasked with vengeance by her mother, who died giving birth to her. She must kill four people. One is already dead, so Oyuki (Lady Snowblood) must eliminate the remaining three individuals. This forms the initial basis of the story. However, the four volumes contain many separate chapters that have absolutely nothing to do with the main storyline. These alternative storylines often take center stage, pushing the actual storyline to the side. I was confused for a significant portion of the story, as there didn't seem to be a clear, definitive drive for most of it. This was somewhat disappointing, but many of the side-stories are fantastic. Many of these storylines involve Oyuki stripping nude or down to almost no clothes. While this might be perceived as a form of fanservice, the way she uses it doesn't seem to be a "fanservice" tactic.
Art: This was drawn in 1972. Over thirty years later... some might think that the art is outdated or bad. I couldn't find any other link to the artist of this series, but he is quite talented. The art really stands apart from more modern manga, yet the feeling isn't diminished. The art isn't dated; it's still quite detailed and offers a nice change if you're tired of viewing more modern manga art. I don't want to say that the artist's forte is drawing Oyuki nude... but she certainly appears naked enough times that I wouldn't be surprised if it really was.
Character: Here is where the manga feels old and somewhat corny. Oyuki isn't the problem. She's a female assassin. Very cold, deadly, but also quite compassionate. She shows it in a certain storyline, one of the more... raunchy ones, but the feeling comes across quite well. All the antagonists are nicely done. The female antagonist, Okono, was my absolute favorite, as she's dealt with in the most entertaining way. The bad subordinates are pretty much all the same scummy yakuza, but that's not a bad thing. The issue lies with the supporting characters. Some are introduced out of nowhere. Oyuki's aunt, for instance, really bothered me. I just never really saw her purpose except for one instance in a storyline and another in the main plot. She's an unnecessary character that doesn't advance the manga, in my opinion at least. There's a writer, Miyanara. He is, by far, the most pointless of all the supporting characters. He's used to lure out the final antagonist from hiding. I enjoyed it at first, but after reading it a second time, I kept asking myself, "what did he contribute to the storyline aside from adding pages to the story?"
Enjoyment: I genuinely enjoyed it, I really... really did. As much as I bought and read it just for the Kill Bill reference, I still greatly appreciated it. I'm not saying it has a lot to do with Kill Bill, or that if you liked Kill Bill, you'll like this. They share certain storylines and artistic choices. The female protagonist is very similar, although I MUCH preferred Oyuki to The Bride. But I found myself really enjoying it. And even if you don't enjoy it all that much, just remember that it's only four volumes... so it's a relatively short read.
There is a lot of nudity and violence in this. It's explicit violence but not drawn to gross out the audience. This manga is definitely worth reading, especially if you enjoy anything with action. If you can set the storyline aside and let the action guide you, this manga can be incredibly enjoyable.

Its tone mirrors Lone Wolf and Cub, a samurai manga I highly recommend, in terms of how the story unfolds. However, it doesn't reach the same epic or unforgettable heights as the latter.
The artwork is skillfully crafted. The characters, though, were rather forgettable and lacked depth. Despite this, I found myself engaged in the story and thoroughly enjoyed it. I still need to watch the live-action adaptation from 1973.
I would suggest this for those interested in classic manga, and who enjoy action, assassins, violence, and aren't bothered by some nudity...
<p>
I am definitely continuing with the story.
It has been a good read so far.
Let the girl get married to Dante so as to teach him some manners. ...
