To be honest, it's an enjoyable wuxia novel. As for the yaoi aspect, it's not really prominent; the only intriguing part was the blue phoenix, though.
Jing Yue, the protagonist, stands out as a character. He may not possess innate qualities like patience or talent, but his wisdom from years of experience instills a calm demeanor when facing challenges. He embodies leadership, maintaining composure, listening, rewarding those who deserve it, and firmly punishing those who don't. His words resonate, as he says, "Follow me, but remember, disobedience has consequences."
Jing Yue also displays kindness and empathy, avoiding naivety. He learns from his mistakes but never forgets them. The novel emphasizes themes like staying true to one's path, overcoming inner demons, acknowledging cause and effect, and the importance of hard work and dedication rather than shortcuts. It conveys a sense of tranquility, teaching that progress takes time, and success isn't solely dependent on talent.
The protagonist's tragic death in his previous life highlights the importance of mental preparedness and the transformative journey he undergoes throughout the story. While there was an 'ultimate enemy,' the novel's true resolution lies in his understanding and mastery of his techniques. In essence, the narrative emphasizes growth, self-discovery, and the interconnected nature of life's lessons.
What I particularly enjoy about this book is the world-building. Although cultivation novels often follow a similar structure, the lore in this one stands out to me.
This isn't your typical love story; their interactions take place after dozens of chapters, but when they finally come together, they'll make a powerful couple, I hope soon (ahaha). The plot progression is fantastic, and it's satisfying to see the main character grow. The supporting characters may not be numerous, but they're likable.
I can't believe it's already chapter 59, and the sweetest thing the main couple did was a warm gaze from ML – the slow burn is simply delightful (haha). If you're looking for an exciting pace, this might not be your choice, as it's quite calm and relaxed.
Edit:
Oh my, it's HIM! And they are the cutest, most formidable Daoist companions in Qifeng! Thank you, author, for making this book relatively easy to translate.
However, I was wrong; there are plenty of adventures here. The main characters keep getting lost in hidden realms with intense plot developments, yet everyone assumes they're secretly cultivating – it's hilarious.
The twists and storytelling are satisfying, and the concept of time and reality being relative is well-explored. Side characters like WZ and RJ also have engaging stories (;∀;).
Spoilers ahead:
Be prepared for a few instances where one half of the couples meets an unfortunate end.
Though it leans heavily on lore and has a slow romance, once the characters develop feelings, the story takes off with a swoon-worthy climax. I give it a 10/10 and look forward to reading it again."
Despite the fatigue, the plot progression was well-structured, gradually revealing hidden secrets and building up to a satisfying finale. The main character (MC) was initially knowledgeable but lacked physical prowess; he grew stronger over time by disappearing to other realms whenever conflicts arose. While I found the MC somewhat bland compared to other witty protagonists, his calm demeanor was appealing. His character development made sense given his long life.
The novel primarily focuses on cultivation, so the romantic relationship between the MC and the love interest (ML) progresses slowly, leaving readers wanting for more intimate moments, or "dog food." However, their interactions were heartwarming and genuine.
One aspect I appreciated was the limited reliance on confrontational scenes, as the MC demonstrated magnanimity, wisdom, and a softer side. This resulted in less memorable antagonists throughout the story. Surprisingly, it was actually the talking blue chicken, Jiji, who seemed to drive the narrative forward - quite an unexpected twist! [spoiler alert]
What adds charm is the ML's proactive flirting and his thick-skinned nature, which leaves MC speechless on more than one occasion, eliciting laughter. However, my sole criticism lies with the ending - it feels abrupt, and there are plot points that were left unresolved.
The writer feels frustrated by what they perceive as the MC's overly cautious behavior, questioning why the MC is still showing loyalty to the old man, especially considering the potential risks to their safety due to their unique abilities. The writer believes the MC should prioritize their own self-preservation, even if it means not prioritizing the old man's well-being.
