Now, having read some comments, I'd like to address those who disliked the series after Volume 1. Let me remind you, this is a <em>Japanese web novel</em>. While it may not be flawless, it's an engaging story with its fair share of strengths and weaknesses. There are moments of boredom and occasional pacing issues, but the narrative eventually recaptures its charm. For those concerned about the main character's sudden power-ups, didn't you notice the "Sudden Strength Gain" tag? It's a significant aspect of the plot.

Regarding the psychological elements, they are indeed present. The protagonist's transformation from a kind-hearted kid to someone driven by survival instincts due to near-death experiences and physical trauma is a profound psychological journey. He starts bordering on the edge of a sociopathic personality (but not a full-blown psychopath), and the genuine love and concern from a few key characters help him regain his humanity. The after story only improves upon this.

In terms of ratings, I would give the main story a 3-3.5 out of 10 (which equates to above average but not exceptional), while the after story earns a 4-4.5 (8-9, excellent but not perfect). That's my personal verdict.

Firstly, I appreciate this novel. I can understand why some readers might rate it low due to misinterpretations. Allow me to share my perspective:

    1. The genre classification can be misleading, as "mature" and "psychological" elements don't align entirely with typical shonen conventions. In reality, it leans more towards a fantastical shonen narrative as the story progresses.

    2. Additionally, there are numerous tags, but it's important to note that it doesn't qualify as a dark fantasy. Terms like "betrayal," "bullying," and "depiction of cruelty" primarily occur at the beginning, with the story后来 developing into a darker shonen genre rather than maintaining a consistently dark tone.

To those who have given this novel a low rating, I suggest reconsidering and approaching it as a shonen series, rather than expecting a dark fantasy experience.

A unique aspect of this book is its lengthy narrative, giving depth to other characters and including romantic subplots, making it a rarity among its kind.

I thoroughly enjoyed this narrative. The first volume was exceptional, akin to a captivating prologue. Initially, the protagonist's character evolves from innocence to determination, driven by tragedy, which prompts him to become resilient and single-minded. Post-first volume, he maintains a balance between a benevolent (BA) attitude and a more pragmatic, self-interested approach.

The story shifts focus from linear progression to exciting adventures and character encounters, while still witnessing growth. New companions join the protagonist's party, introducing diverse magic and eventually leading to a climactic showdown with the main antagonist. The addition of female characters is handled巧妙, with each introduction being well-integrated rather than haphazard. The first girl becomes his inseparable partner, while subsequent relationships develop gradually through shared experiences and emotional connections.

What sets this apart from typical harem novels is the author's skill in addressing each character individually, granting them meaningful development. Despite the protagonist's initial avoidance of romantic advances, he ultimately overcomes that barrier, which I found refreshing. The balance between romance and harem dynamics was handled commendably, satisfying both aspects of the genre.

The climax satisfactorily concludes the main storyline, but the epilogue's side stories are where the story truly shines. These额外的故事线 delve deeper into unexplored worlds, global issues, and personal motivations, providing a rich tapestry for the narrative. The author's world-building prowess is evident, and the reasons behind the protagonist's involvement resonate emotionally.

Overall, I wholeheartedly enjoyed this story, appreciating its well-rounded characters and immersive world. While the genre may not be universally appealing, the author's execution is commendable. I highly recommend it to readers seeking a compelling mix of adventure, romance, and character development.

As of May 9th, 2017, I'm up to date with the translations and I must say that the story's quality has been declining steadily. The first volume was excellent, with a dark premise and a unique character. However, it quickly shifted to a lighter tone, which wasn't a deal-breaker for me. The addition of a harem as the protagonist grows stronger and edgier is a common trope in isekai novels, so it didn't bother me much.

What really derailed the story was the repetitive nature of the dialogues between the characters in his harem. While I understand that it's not meant to be taken seriously, constant interruptions of plot progression for arguments among the wives felt forced and disrupted the pacing. The fights became monotonous, reduced to shouting matches and trivial conflicts, which got tiresome after encountering them numerous times. Each chapter turned into a chore to read, as the same patterns of conversations about adoration and rivalries were recycled without much variation.

In summary, while the initial setup had potential, the repetitive nature of the story's content made it lose its appeal for me.

To begin with, the series starts with a typical edgy protagonist seeking their goals, and the world-building might not be top-notch at first. However, as you progress, the world expands significantly. By the time "Arifureta After" commences, the world-building becomes extraordinary – it's not just one-dimensional but intricately connected and well thought-out, akin to a Marvel Cinematic Universe experience in anime form.

The author truly stands out in creating a universe that keeps growing even after the initial novel concludes, ensuring each subsequent installment offers unique experiences without becoming repetitive. There are occasional filler chapters to balance the narrative, but they're engaging in their own way, offering insights into characters' thoughts and side stories.

"Arifureta After" can be seen as a prequel to the main series, with its own slice-of-life aspect and a fresh storyline that follows Hajime and his companions on new adventures, tackling absurd situations compared to the previous plot.

This series blends multiple genres, including comedy, action, fantasy, mecha, and isekai, delivering a lighthearted tale with a touch of darkness. While it may not delve deeply into realism, the focus is on the humorous and unconventional aspects of the characters' journeys, which can be quite entertaining.

In conclusion, for its impressive world-building alone, this series deserves a solid 5-star rating, and I'd even argue for a 6 if possible. If you're considering reading, start with "Arifureta After," as the anime adaptation is on its way. And remember, it's not a dark and gritty story; instead, it's a comedic, fantastical adventure that celebrates the absurdity and quirks of its characters. Enjoy the ride!

It seems like the reviewer is expressing confusion about the book's tone shift, particularly regarding the protagonist's journey. They find it odd that despite initial darkness after a betrayal, the story becomes more hopeful. The main female characters' desire for the hero's happiness and redemption is seen as a redeeming factor, even if it involves some clichés.

The reviewer does acknowledge some positive aspects, such as well-developed fight scenes, the character's growth from an edgy persona back to his original self, and a consistent plotline. They also enjoy the engaging interactions between characters. However, they criticize the excessive use of tropes and references, which they feel might be outdated, and the cringe-worthy portrayal of the hero's class when he interacts. They admit that while the plot might be predictable for fantasy fans, it could still serve as a decent starting point for newcomers.

In summary, the reviewer appreciates certain elements but feels that the book relies too heavily on cliches and could benefit from a fresher approach to storytelling.

I rate this with three stars because the story itself is engaging, but the author pushes the edgy envelope too far. I appreciate complex characters, but the global population being emotionally one-dimensional solely to make the main character appear cool through their reckless behavior is concerning. The narrator's constant praise of him without any criticism shows a lack of self-awareness from the author. It would be refreshing if another character called the protagonist out on their actions at least occasionally.

The story's reliance on edginess becomes a forced joke when there's no balance with common sense – a grounded character could provide a needed contrast. Some works, like Dungeon Seeker (haven't read the novel), intentionally embrace absurdity to justify extreme edginess. Alternatively, committing to a clear villainy or chaotic neutrality would be more effective than trying to present a flawed "noble jerk" archetype.

Despite these issues, I remain intrigued by the manga, as the narration helps mask the lack of self-awareness. However, if you enjoy intensely edgy narratives, you might be able to overlook this shortcoming.

It's an entertaining read, despite occasional annoyance from the harem members. Both main characters, male and female, are likable. The story development is what truly matters. The first volume is fantastic, but the Volcano Dungeon Conquest part might feel dull. Don't give up - it improves significantly after that. I've paused a few times myself, around volumes 2 to 4, but it gets better later on. If possible, opt for the light novel version over the web novel. Give it a chance; you won't regret it.

This web novel is indeed exceptional, despite some criticisms about its decline after Volume 1, particularly the increase in love comedy elements. As a web novel, it doesn't have the same level of quality assurance like traditional novels, which might explain the differences. The light novel adaptation might offer a more polished experience.

Regarding the main character's development, it's important to remember that he isn't meant to remain entirely on the "good" side. His transformation from a likable protagonist to a more complex figure with shades of gray is purposeful. Factors in his life shaped his actions, allowing him to retain some goodness while becoming more pragmatic. Comparing him to overpowered martial arts protagonists might not be fair, considering he's initially just a high school student. It's unrealistic to expect a sudden transformation into a flawless individual.

While I accidentally gave it a low rating, I believe it deserves a second look. It has managed to resonate with readers, indicating that it's not as poorly received as some might claim. For those who've endured truly disappointing stories, this one serves as a refreshing escape for me.

Let me begin by acknowledging that the initial part of the novel is indeed captivating. The story starts strong with its familiar tropes, featuring a relatable yet somewhat weak protagonist and an oblivious, equally popular female lead. The first ten chapters provide an engaging reading experience as the main character undergoes a compelling transformation.

However, the issues arise post-transformation. As the protagonist gains prowess, the narrative loses some traction. His newfound character traits actually undermine his badassery, and supporting characters become repetitive in their praise of him. Other drawbacks include:

    1. A poorly executed edgy teenage anti-hero whose writing lacks finesse.
    2. Side characters excessively讴歌这位反英雄,缺乏深度。
    3. Loose plot threads that go unresolved.
    4. Relationships that initially seem like a harem, but ultimately feel forced, with the girls appearing one-dimensional in their pursuit of the protagonist.

In light of these shortcomings, I advise readers to approach the book cautiously, especially after the initial excitement fades. I cannot wholeheartedly recommend it beyond the beginning, giving it a modest rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Decided to pen this review in response to the negative feedback. I can empathize with some aspects, but not all. The harem aspect might be deemed effortless and unrealistic, but that's a preference. Men do desire a group of women, after all, and the first volume caters to that fantasy for its intended audience. Critics calling harem content in youth-oriented novels a fulfillment of desires, please grow up. I'm sure your notion of a "normal" romance is also an idealized version from a virgin's perspective.

As for darkness, how dark were you expecting? Scenes involving rape, impregnation, or leaving with a smile? Or turning into a heartless killer, targeting anyone who dares to cross you? Such dark themes don't belong in a light novel.

Honestly, while I didn't think it was exceptional beyond the first volume, it wasn't the worst either.

If you're visiting because of the manga or anime but still unsure about reading this, I highly recommend starting with the prologue. Although it might not provide a solid justification, it'll give you a glimpse into why the students, including the main character Hajime, disliked him. For those who simply want to skip familiar content:

    - If you've read the manga: Jump to Chapter 42, which corresponds to Volume 3, Chapter 20.
    - If you've watched the anime: Resume at Episode 13, which aligns with Volume 3, Chapter 31.
