Whistle is the best soccer, no, the best sports manga I've ever read. I adored Prince of Tennis, and it was my top manga until I encountered Whistle! I vividly recall almost crying when Tenipuri concluded, feeling so fulfilled and happy for the series and its characters. Of course, there's now a sequel, but I'll wait until it finishes so I can binge-read it.

Sports manga is one of my favorite genres. I get deeply invested in the characters and love learning more about sports I don't usually pay attention to in real life.

The reason I loved Whistle! is that it felt real. It may sound silly, but Sho (the protagonist) is a young boy who isn't skilled or talented at soccer. He doesn't gain magical powers, nor does he single-handedly bring his team to victory like Captain Tsubasa shows. Sho works hard, he cries and sweats, but he never gives up. His strongest trait is his stubbornness—he loves soccer and refuses to quit.

I read some reviews that made me furious. Calling Whistle! just another sports manga where Sho never loses is utterly wrong, and it makes me genuinely angry.

In the manga, after Sho receives special training outside his school, he returns with improved skills compared to his schoolmates who play for fun. They don't win matches merely because Sho is there. A team's strength depends on its individual members. In real life, one member alone cannot lead to victory.

This realism isn't common in other sports manga, or even in soccer. Captain Tsubasa popularized the idea that "as long as you have one outstanding member and the rest are sub-par, you can still succeed," which is nonsense.

In this regard, and many others, Whistle! is a realistic sports manga. As I said, Sho has to work extremely hard, constantly striving to improve and earn a spot on teams and playing time.

I'm trying not to spoil anything, but one thing that deeply affected me was the ending. I cried. The manga had given me moments of angst and pain because Sho's life isn't easy.

From facing bullying to struggling against bigger opponents and relentlessly training, Sho remains a bright, happy young boy who lives for soccer—it's his life and joy. When the ending came, I started crying, feeling heartbroken, unable to breathe or see clearly. I can't forget his face, what he said, his state. This was a side of Sho I'd never seen before, and it hurt so much. I love Sho, everything he stands for, how he always tries his best. Thinking about his ending (with an open ending that could go either way) fills me with emotion.

It's hard to put into words why something affects me so deeply that I'd give it a 5/5 (or 10/10 depending on the website), but this manga truly deserves my highest rating.

I'm selective with giving 5/5 ratings. Out of nearly 800 books on GoodReads (soon to be 2000), only 20-30 are 5 stars. Similarly, on MyAnimeList, I'd find a similar pattern. I can't give the maximum rate unless something profoundly impacts me—positively or negatively. Otherwise, I end up giving 4's.

One surprise was discovering that the mangaka didn't produce anything substantial before or after Whistle! So, in a way, this is their magnum opus. And I can't express how highly I view it.

If you haven't read it, I truly urge you to do so. It starts slow, and by the end, it felt like the ending was inevitable because continuing would have led to cliché victories, which never happen in Whistle! It's about Sho's growth as a person and player, but it never becomes victory-centric. It stays grounded with the characters, as we learn more about their pasts.

In the end, it's about a small young boy named Sho who influenced a generation of players simply by existing, by playing alongside them, showing that perseverance—not talent or skill—is all you need to improve.

My rating is, of course, 5/5, 10/10. Perhaps even 20/5, because for three days after finishing, whenever I remembered Whistle!, I'd start crying. Just like that.

Even now, my eyes sting because I'm still hung up on this manga, and it's been at least five months since I last read it.

Sports enthusiast? Thrill seeker? Soccer aficionado? Well, Whistle! This manga has all three :) With a total of 24 volumes, each one offers something compelling that makes you eager for the next. As I mentioned, Whistle! revolves around soccer and follows a junior high student who initially struggled but eventually made it to a select team.

The story was exciting and engaging, yet it lacked uniqueness. Many mangas follow a similar pattern: characters start off unskilled but gradually succeed. Sometimes, it's too predictable; almost every time, the main character (Sho) performs an incredible feat and wins the game. He only lost once or twice, if at all. It's the classic underdog story. However, towards the end, there were some surprising twists, which concluded quite well.

I adored the artwork in this manga. The artist's style vividly captured the essence of soccer.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it :)

OK, I will write my review about this manga.

This manga is... unbelievable. I have read many manga/anime, but it is the first time I see a story about someone who doesn't have any talent. Usually, the main character has a talent (in ability) that isn't shown at first and only becomes apparent later. However, the main character in this manga, Sho, doesn't have any special abilities; his abilities are normal.

In many sports manga, I've seen the main character's school lose in the first competition and then win in the next one, often at the national level, and even be called up to the national team if the manga includes such elements. But Sho doesn't win any cups with his school, which surprised me. Moreover, in this manga, defenders aren't as useless as they are in many other football manga I've seen, and the tactics portrayed here are closer to reality than those in other manga.

You can see how one man, who seems to have nothing, becomes the soul of the selected team. No, he becomes an essential part of every team he joins because he never gives up, no matter how difficult things get.

I love this manga so much, and you should read it at least once.

Whistle! is a widely read manga that appeals to all ages. Even if sports aren't your thing or you're not typically into Shounen Jump Manga, I genuinely suggest giving this one a chance.

I've reread Whistle! so many times that I've lost count. But I wanted to share why I love this series so much. It's one of the most inspiring manga series I've ever encountered and the only one I own almost entirely.

Finding fault with this series is challenging for me. The story is incredible, and the artwork is phenomenal. All the characters tend to grow on you over time. The enjoyment is intense and exciting, making the entire manga series bewildering. After each volume—each chapter really—I couldn't wait for more. These feelings remain every time I pick up this series.

The author did an excellent job capturing what it means to chase dreams, the stumbles along the way, and the silent support from loved ones. Most importantly, the author shows that anything can be achieved through hard work and dedication.

I adore the spirit of Whistle! Its moods and atmosphere differ from other Shounen Jump Manga I've read. Seeing through the eyes of a character who struggles makes it feel more believable in many ways.

Sho Kazamatsuri doesn't believe he's very good initially, but he works harder to compensate for his lack of skill and technique. His passion (or obsession) makes it hard not to fall in love with him as the main character. His drive could make it impossible to beat him. Most importantly, his personality draws out the best in those around him, whether they're teammates or not. Through each volume, Sho meets many amazing characters who continually inspire him to do his best and be the best he can be.

I could go through just about all the characters this same way—telling you why I love them—but I won't. You could just read this series and find out for yourself why I love it so much.

Please just check it out. You might enjoy it just as much as I do.

"If your opponent is a superior player... you need to polish what you're best at and use it in the fight." -Ko Kazamatsuri

Thanks for reading. If this review makes you, even in the smallest way, want to pick up a volume of Whistle! and start reading today, then I'm glad.
