In most romance anime or manga, it usually takes a long time before the protagonist musters the courage to confess their love. This delay forms the core of the narrative and drives the characters' actions. However, Love Roma breaks this mold with its main character, Hoshino, who confesses his love right on the first page, in the first speech bubble, no less, within the very first frame.

This unusual start sets Love Roma apart from typical romance stories. Rather than focusing on the journey towards forming a relationship, it delves into what happens after the confession, exploring the dynamics of the relationship itself. Defining Love Roma as shonen, seinen, or shoujo is challenging; however, its broad appeal makes these distinctions irrelevant. The story avoids dramatic conflicts like infidelity or other intense issues, opting instead for a light-hearted tone that leaves readers feeling happy and content. It's the kind of story that gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

The art style also stands out. While the cover may not resemble conventional manga aesthetics, don't let that deter you. The unique style grows on you, making it hard to imagine the story told any other way. Describing the art as 'indie' might be cliché, but it does capture the fresh, distinctive approach of Minoru Toyoda. His bold, stylistic character designs convey emotions effectively, despite their simplicity. The backgrounds are simple yet functional, and the dialogue is just right—not overwhelming the artwork with massive text blocks. This makes Love Roma an easy and enjoyable read.

For anyone seeking a slice-of-life romance manga, Love Roma is an excellent choice. Don't expect earth-shattering plots; instead, let it transport you to a world free from real-world evils. You might even glean some insights about relationships along the way.

I decided to write my first review for Love Roma because it's a story that captured my heart instantly. To start, Love Roma is a rare gem in the manga world. I'm certain it isn't the best-written or best-illustrated one out there, nor can I say it stands out as an exceptional title within its genre, but its charm surpasses all that.

WHAT MAKES LOVE ROMA SO UNIQUE?
Instead of following the conventional love story trajectory where the main plot revolves around falling in love (with the typical confession near the end), Love Roma centers on the growth of that love: "Okay, these two are now a couple... so what?" From the very beginning, Hoshino and Negishi begin learning a lot from each other, their friends, and family while navigating the path of young love.

    ART
I also want to highlight its original art style. Many have commented that Toyoda Minoru's art appears silly or childish, but I find it refreshingly unique. Even though it might not fit the traditional "manga style," everything's design is distinct and brimming with personality. The manga covers and color pages feature beautiful color schemes that perfectly match the story's tone: youth, hope, love, friendship, and a bright future.

    OVERALL
The story is simple yet meaningful, filled with funny and charismatic characters. Given that Love Roma only spans five volumes, don't expect profoundly deep character development. However, considering its limited number of chapters, it's quite satisfactory. This is a tale about people, their connections, love, growing up, and life. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am sure I'll reread it multiple times.

(If you loved Love Roma as much as I did, I recommend "Takeo-chan Bukkairoku" by Toyoda-sensei. I bet you'll enjoy it too).

At first sight, the artwork might seem off-putting, as it did for me initially. However, by the end of the first chapter, I found myself laughing out loud at the interactions between the two main characters and everyone else in their world.

This series leans more towards comedy for me, but the humor originates from the budding romance between our delightful protagonists. It's everything I could ask for in a romcom! They navigate their differences in a healthy manner, build their relationship despite those differences, and are surrounded by an incredibly enjoyable group of friends.

I highly recommend this series to romcom enthusiasts. You won't be swooning over Hoshino for his looks or fanning yourself because Negishi is such a heartthrob—no, none of that. Instead, you'll find yourself immersed in their love story from start to finish, right up to their new beginning at the end.
