Tatsuya is a second-year student at Sakura Jyousui and is considered the best player on the team, possibly the best junior high school player in the series. He is not only a talented soccer player but also an honor student. Impressed by Shō's determination and hard work, Tatsuya tutors him. Shigeki calls him "Tatsu-bon," which always annoys him.

Though many see him as cool-headed with an indifferent expression, Tatsuya becomes very passionate when it comes to matters involving his father. He lives with his mother, Mariko Mizuno—who looks so young that she is often mistaken for his sister—and his aunts, Takako and Yuki, in the Mizuno mansion. This arrangement came about after his parents' divorce, with his mother gaining custody.

Tatsuya's father is the coach of the Musashinomori soccer team. It was revealed that during his first year, Tatsuya passed Musashinomori's qualifying tests to join their soccer club but rejected the offer to avoid being controlled by his father.
