Rin is a seven-year-old neighbor of Alice Sakaguchi, turning eight during the series. He has taken pleasure in tormenting her ever since she moved in next door. Despite this behavior, Alice finds herself babysitting him one day. By the end of the day, they engage in a childish argument over Jinpachi, whom they encounter while out. To provoke Alice, Rin grabs the crocus they purchased that day and drops it from the fifteenth-story balcony onto the ground. In response, Alice slaps Rin, causing him to lose balance and fall over the edge. Panicking, Alice tries to catch him but loses her grip and also falls from the fifteen-story balcony. Miraculously, Rin survives the fall but falls into a coma. During this coma, Rin experiences nearly all of Shion's memories in an incredibly condensed timeframe. Rin is the reincarnation of Shion.
