Birthday: June 21 (Gemini) Yuuko is a mysterious girl whom Hiro first encounters in a church on Christmas night. She has an enigmatic presence, appearing and disappearing suddenly in various locations throughout the story to converse with Hiro or other characters and offer guidance; interestingly, Miyako already knows her. Yuuko can be considered the pivotal character throughout the ef narrative. She becomes a main character in the second series, with part of the storyline focusing on her connection to Himura. Yuuko is kind-hearted but hates being alone, maintaining a brave facade even when she is upset or hurt. In her early life, Yuuko lived in an orphanage where she met Himura. Their brief friendship ended when he told her she couldn't be his 'sister.' This rejection led her to start self-harming. Soon after, she was adopted by Akira, who had lost his younger sister in an earthquake. However, Akira was physically and sexually abusive towards her because she resembled his deceased sister. Despite this, Yuuko remained silent as she had nowhere else to go. Years later, coincidentally living with Akira, she attends the same school as Himura, where Akira works as an art teacher. She begins to follow Himura around to upset him for the past rejection. Over time, her anger subsides, and she realizes that back then, she didn't want to be his 'sister'; she wanted to tell him she loved him. After reconciling with Himura and his realization of his love for her, her life is tragically cut short. On Christmas day, while waiting for Himura, she is hit by a car while trying to save young Mizuki and dies shortly after praying in a church for their safety and that of their unborn child. In the anime, her death occurs while trying to retrieve a small ball. Her spirit continues to visit troubled individuals in the EF world, unbeknownst to Himura. At the end of the second series, Himura learns of her appearances and finds her spirit in the Japanese Otowa Church on Christmas Day. They spend one final day together, but after correcting him, saying he "loved her" rather than "loves her," she tells Himura her work is done and it's time for him to move on. Yuuko was 16 years old, as her headstone indicates she was born in 1982 and passed away in 1998. Thus, the time period in EF - A Tale of Melodies was 2008.
