Yume studied at the Jurai Science Academy concurrently with Washu Hakubi. Yume finished second in their class, while Washu took the top spot. Unlike Doctor Clay, Yume was acknowledged by Washu as a genuine rival whose intellect merited respect.
Besides their intellectual duels, Yume and Washu also participated in drinking contests at a bar close to the Academy. Following one such contest shortly before Washu's capture by Kagato, the heavily intoxicated geniuses agreed to a challenge: whoever conquered the Jurai Empire first would win, with the loser becoming the winner's slave. While Washu passed out and promptly forgot about this bet, Yume committed herself entirely to winning the competition. She created three formidable warriors, the Shima Brothers, to execute her plan, and stole the 2nd-generation Jurai royal tree Bizen. Yume then placed herself in suspended animation to await their acquisition of the Jurai Book of Secrets, which contained crucial information needed to control Bizen's powers.
