Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki:
In the original series, Sasami and her sister Ayeka are daughters of Emperor Masaki Azusa Jurai and his second wife, Empress Misaki Jurai. On her mother's side, Sasami’s grandmother is Seto Kamiki Jurai and her grandfather is Utsutsumi Kamiki. From her father’s side, her grandmother is Masaki Amame and her grandfather is Yotsuga Kazuki. Sasami has a half-brother named Yosho Masaki Jurai, who is the son of Emperor Azusa and his first wife, Funaho. Early in the series, Sasami and Ayeka start living on Earth with Tenchi’s family, which includes Tenchi, his father Nobuyuki, and his grandfather Katsuhito (formerly Yosho), along with the cat-like creature Ryo-Ohki and three other women. Sasami arrived on Earth by accident, hiding aboard her sister's ship while searching for Yosho. She quickly became close friends with Ryo-Ohki and even Ryoko, despite Ryoko threatening her almost immediately upon meeting.
Sasami harbors a dark secret from her past. Seven hundred years ago, during an attack on Jurai by Ryoko, Sasami sustained severe injuries after falling in the Royal Arboretum. Believing she had died that day, she thought she was now a copy of the "real" Sasami. In reality, Tsunami-kami-sama, in the form of Tsunami-no-ki, healed her by absorbing and recreating her body, merging their spirits. Consequently, they are one being with two souls, growing more intertwined as they age. This duality influences her personality and grants her unique powers not seen in other series. She commands the most powerful ship, Tsunami-fune, can summon it from subspace at will, and possesses precognitive abilities that manifest as disturbing nightmares.
Sasami kept this secret hidden, fearing rejection from those she loved. When revealed, Ayeka reassured her that she was still loved unconditionally. Tenchi, Yosho, and the others also accepted the truth without hesitation. Additionally, Sasami is a skilled fighter, likely trained by her mother, who leads the Royal Bodyguard. Her hairband can transform into a battle staff, and she easily defeated Mashisu Makibi, a trained Galaxy Police officer.
Galaxy Space Mihoshi Special:
This one-off episode serves as a pilot for both Tenchi Universe and Pretty Sammy. Sasami appears as herself but plays a cadet in the Galaxy Police with a secret identity as Pretty Sammy and her pet Ryo-Ohki. She is known for making the best tea in the GXP.
Tenchi Universe:
In this TV series, Sasami remains Ayeka's sister and princess of Jurai, though her parents are not mentioned. Yosho and Tenchi appear to be distant relatives. Without Tsunami, Sasami lacks any alter-ego except Pretty Sammy. She excels at cooking and maintains a cheerful, innocent outlook on life, lacking special powers. Although she once owned a ship, it was destroyed, stranding her on Earth. An expert at games, especially fighting ones, she trains Azaka. During the "Time and Space Adventures" episodes, Sasami often takes a backseat in stories, except when playing "Pretty Sammy," where she eventually takes center stage.
Tenchi Muyo! in Love 1 & 2:
Set in the Universe continuity, these movies retain Sasami's personality. A manga companion to the second movie introduces Tsunami-kami-sama to the Universe continuity but its official status is unclear. The manga suggests Sasami and Tenchi may have a child named Izumi, but Sasami dies soon after giving birth. However, according to Sasami’s narration, this is just one possible future, and every choice they make can change their fate.
Tenchi in Tokyo:
Sasami's personality becomes more volatile, prone to sudden anger and sulking. She befriends Yugi before discovering her true nature but remains loyal until the end. Ryo-Ohki is her pet in this series.
