The primary male protagonist of the series and the initial Diary user. Also known as Yuki (ユッキー, Yukkī), he is a 14-year-old middle school student who is generally quiet with antisocial tendencies and doesn't engage much in conversation. He observes his surroundings passively and documents them meticulously in his cell phone diary. Yuki becomes entangled in the Diary Game when Deus, a god-like entity whom he had believed to be an imaginary friend, turns out to be real and selects him as one of twelve participants in a brutal 90-day battle royale where they must eliminate each other using their unique diaries. The last survivor will become Deus' successor. Yuki's diary is called the Random Diary, providing accurate descriptions of his environment from his perspective, whether past or future. While adaptable in various situations, its main drawback is that it doesn't inform him about his own status, making him vulnerable. Moreover, because the diary reflects his viewpoint, Yuki can be deceived into believing something is true without realizing otherwise, posing a risk for those who rely on the Random Diary.
Unlike most contestants, Yuki does not wish to participate in the game as he desires a peaceful life and abhors killing. However, he is compelled to play to survive and resorts to lethal actions only as a final measure since he is targeted by other diary users due to Deus favoring him as the likely winner. Due to his weakness, Yuki swiftly forms friendships and alliances for protection, including with Yuno Gasai, a classmate infatuated with him and another diary user. Yuki is kind-hearted but naive, easily trusting others regardless of their intentions. His relationship with Yuno is particularly complex; although she is a powerful ally, her obsessive love for him, to the point of murder or manipulation, terrifies him. Nonetheless, Yuki relies on Yuno for his safety.
Initially, Yuki aimed to conclude the game peacefully without bloodshed. This goal shifts after his mother is accidentally killed by his father, who is subsequently murdered by agents of John Bacchus, the Eleventh Diary user. Grieving over his parents' deaths, Yuno convinces Yuki that winning the game and becoming the new God of Time and Space would allow him to resurrect them using divine powers. With this renewed objective, Yuki becomes resolute in winning at any cost, even resorting to deception, murder, betrayal, and destruction. His altered behavior astonishes his friends, as his and Yuno's actions lead to a series of citywide terrorist attacks.
