Yōichi is initially attached to Natsume but shows dislike towards Mikan at first. However, he later grows fond of Mikan and even kisses her on the cheek once. As the manga progresses, he starts clinging to her more often. He has also become very fond of Mr. Bear.
His Alice allows him to summon bad spirits, which falls under the Dangerous Ability type. Despite his young age, Yōichi is exceptionally bright. Natsume feels a connection with him, seeing similarities between them, and helps Yōichi transfer out of the Dangerous Ability class.
Like Mikan, he loves "Fluff Puffs," known as Howalon in Japanese, which is the best-selling candy in Central Town.
During the Hana Princess arc, Yōichi accidentally consumes an aging candy that he stole from Hotaru. This transforms him into a 13-year-old temporarily. The side effect grants him the ability to switch between his younger and older selves. Even when he changes his age, his mind remains that of a 3-year-old, leading to awkward situations for Mikan, especially since he enjoys hugging and carrying her.
Yōichi is the youngest member of the Dangerous Ability Class and holds the rank of a Single Star student.
He also appears in M to N no Shōzō as Eiichi Hijiri's younger brother.
