Natsume undertakes top-secret missions for the Academy, which are somewhat shady and not fully explained in the story. These missions often leave him injured. Initially paired with Mikan as her partner by their teacher Narumi, Natsume initially resists but eventually accepts and begins to enjoy Mikan's company. Over time, he becomes friendlier with his classmates, though he never loses his dangerous edge or temper. The rumor surrounding Natsume's entry into the Academy was that he had once set fire to a village. In reality, it was his sister Aoi who accidentally caused the blaze, losing her Alice, memories, and sight in the process. Aoi is used as leverage to ensure Natsume's cooperation, and even after her release, he continues his missions to protect Mikan and Ruka. Natsume has a close friendship with Ruka, who understands his reasons for being at the Academy. As the series progresses, he grows fond of Mikan and tries to shield her from the Academy's darker aspects.
