Mikan is the protagonist of the story. She is a cute, energetic, and good-natured girl, but her clumsiness often gets her into trouble. She is very active and athletic, much to the annoyance of her pragmatic friend, Hotaru. Mikan used to live with her grandfather in the countryside.
She was shocked to learn that Hotaru was moving back to the city to attend an academy for young 'geniuses' like her. When she heard rumors that students at Alice Academy were treated like slaves (which she believed could be true since the school paid parents for their children's attendance), Mikan left her grandfather and home to follow Hotaru on her own. She was accepted into Alice Academy by Narumi-sensei and could now attend with Hotaru and other children with extraordinary powers.
Her primary Alice is Nullification, which can resist Pheromone-type Alices and negate the powers of other Alices near her. She also possesses the Stealing-Alice, inherited from her mother, which allows her to steal Alices and turn them into colored rocks. Both of her Alices are rare and special.
Initially, she belonged to the Special Ability Class. Later, she transferred to the Dangerous Ability Class and became the Elementary Principal's favorite student. Though currently a Single Star, it’s likely she will be promoted to Special Star due to the principal's favor.
Throughout the story, Mikan has a significant impact on Natsume and Ruka, both of whom begin to fall in love with her. As the story progresses, she gains the admiration and respect of many who initially felt uneasy about her Alice. Her relationship with Hotaru also strengthens. Her name means "Mandarin Orange" in Japanese.
After losing her Alice, Mikan is forced to leave the Academy and have her memories erased to ensure no one outside targets her for information about the school. Not knowing what happened to Natsume and Hotaru, she returns to her grandfather but is allowed to take Bear with her under the condition that its true nature remains hidden.
Four years later, Mikan is a high school student living peacefully in the countryside, protected by Shiki's barrier. One day, she is targeted by unknown individuals and is saved by Narumi. At the same time, one of her captured childhood friends is revealed to be Hijiri Goshima in disguise. Confused, Mikan experiences flashbacks but doesn't clearly remember anyone. She then stumbles upon Natsume standing behind her.
In the epilogue, it shows that Mikan and Natsume continue their relationship and eventually get married.
