Winry Rockbell is a childhood friend of the Elric brothers and often accompanies them throughout the series. She is clearly Edward's love interest. As an expert in automail maintenance, Winry frequently repairs and replaces Edward's prosthetic arm and leg.
In the manga, she becomes an apprentice to Garfiel, an automail engineer in Rush Valley, where she learns techniques for creating automail suitable for cold climates. Her parents, both doctors, were killed by Scar during the Ishbal war when she was very young. In chapter 47, she attempts to shoot Scar after discovering he was responsible for her parents' deaths.
She frequently travels with the Elrics in the early parts of the story. Later, upon returning to Rush Valley, she realizes she has been in love with Ed for a long time. Although Ed constantly denies his feelings, he reciprocates her affection.
In chapter 15, it is mentioned that Alphonse and Edward once fought over who would marry Winry when they were younger. This caused Ed to become flustered, insisting he didn't remember it.
