Edward "Fullmetal Alchemist" Elric is a prodigious young alchemist, recognized as the youngest State Alchemist by the Amestris State Military at just 12 years old. His primary goal throughout the series is to restore his younger brother Alphonse's original body, which was lost during a failed human transmutation. Despite occasional immaturity, Edward is selfless and earns a reputation as a "hero of the people." He focuses solely on his brother's suffering rather than his own missing limbs.
Standing at only 149 cm (4'11"), Edward is small for his age but possesses the physique of an experienced martial artist with noticeable muscles and agility. Despite lacking his right arm and left leg, he remains a formidable fighter, often transforming his metal arm into a blade or shield using alchemy. His automail limbs, crafted by his childhood friend Winry Rockbell, are considered top-notch in Amestris. Edward can think quickly even in desperate situations, though he can still be paralyzed by fear. Combined with his alchemical powers and physical strength, these qualities make him a powerful adversary.
Born to Trisha Elric and Van Hohenheim in Resembool in the winter of 1899, Edward's early years were relatively happy. However, after his father's sudden departure, Edward, his mother, and younger brother Alphonse lived together peacefully in their rural village. The boys displayed remarkable alchemical talent from a young age, much to their mother's delight. In 1904, Trisha fell ill and passed away, leaving her sons orphaned. Mourning, Edward vowed to bring their mother back to life using alchemy.
For several years, Edward and Alphonse lived alone, supported by their friend Winry Rockbell and her grandmother Pinako, while pursuing the knowledge needed for their resurrection plan. They gained significant alchemical understanding but realized they needed formal training. Fortunately, the skilled alchemist Izumi Curtis visited Resembool and agreed to take them as apprentices after they passed a preliminary test. Under her intensive training, the brothers grew both mentally and physically, gaining extensive alchemical knowledge before returning home.
Despite Izumi's warnings about the irreversible nature of death and the importance of accepting it, the brothers attempted human transmutation upon their return. They created a Human Transmutation Circle, gathered the necessary ingredients, and used their blood to try to revive their mother. The attempt resulted in a Rebound, pulling both brothers into the Gate. Edward lost his left leg in exchange for glimpsing divine alchemical knowledge, while Alphonse disappeared entirely. Upon returning to the human world, Edward found that their mother had been revived as a grotesque mass of organs and that he could now perform transmutations without a circle. Desperate, Edward sacrificed his right arm to bind Alphonse's soul to an antique suit of armor.
On the night of the failed transmutation, Lt. Colonel Roy Mustang visited the Rockbells after receiving a letter from the brothers asking about their father. Shocked by their survival, he suggested they become State Alchemists to potentially find a way to restore their bodies. Determined to help his brother, Edward requested automail prosthetics from the Rockbells, adapting to them in just one year despite the painful surgery.
