Ul is a highly skilled ice mage who trained both Leon and Gray. While walking through a town devastated by the evil demon Deliora, Ul and her first apprentice Leon discovered a lone survivor—Gray. From that moment on, Ul took both boys under her wing to train them as ice mages, eventually seeing them as her own sons.
It was later revealed that Ultear is Ul's daughter, and Siegrain speculated that if Ul were still alive, she would likely be one of the Ten Holy Mages. During a battle with Deliora, which was triggered by Gray running away from Ul to confront the demon alone, Ul sacrificed herself to save him. She used Iced Shell, a technique that turns the user's body into ice, effectively freezing the enemy. However, Ul didn't actually die; she was transformed into ice. This was confirmed when Deliora perished after being frozen for too long.
