Akari is a transgender woman whose birth name is Mitarai Toukichirou. Initially perceived as less skilled in combat compared to the other Shiseiten, she possesses magical abilities on par with them and is later revealed to be an exceptional swordsman. Akari can manipulate ki, which allows for rapid healing and endless fighting energy, though she cannot use these powers on herself. She wields the Devil Eye, an ancient weapon embedded in her gloved left hand that turns anyone who makes eye contact with it into dust. Akari dislikes using the Devil Eye because she considers it a tool for murder unsuitable for honorable battles. The Devil Eye also serves as a barrier, protecting its bearer from harmful spells.
In a fight against Mekira I, he attempted to use his Medusa Eyes, a weaker version of the Devil Eye that turns victims to stone, on Akari but failed. Akari then used the Devil Eye on Mekira, turning him to dust. Often providing comic relief, she uses a shakujou, a staff with bells and rings at the top. Once, she made Kyo promise to marry her if she ever landed a hit on him, but she never succeeded in doing so throughout the series.
Akari first appeared in volume 22 of the manga, where she also revealed her past. Raised as a female despite being born male, she was often treated as a demon due to her powers or used by others for her abilities. She was the last to join the Shiseiten.
It was later revealed that Hishigi implanted the Devil Eye into Akari's hand to spy on her and awaken her true powers. When activated, the Devil Eye takes control of Akari, transforming her into Ashura. Kyo ultimately destroys the Devil Eye by showing it a reflection of itself, freeing Akari from its control.
