The Gate is a sentient entity and literally serves as the portal that goddesses, among other beings, use to travel between worlds. On Earth, she appears as a young girl. She gathers information from those who pass through her, knowledge that even surpasses that of the goddesses. However, when Peorth is urgently recalled to heaven, she cannot return because the Gate has gone on strike.
Summoned by the goddesses, the Gate manifests at the temple, seeking firsthand experience of real life, emotions, and specifically, romantic relationships. It is later revealed that this curiosity stems from hearing about Keiichi and Belldandy's story, which reached even her. Feeling lonely in her ancient duty of facilitating travel, she desires to experience love from Keiichi, unaware of the complexities involved in genuine relationships and honest love.
After several incidents (including one of Belldandy's jealousy outbursts), the Gate begins to understand the essence of Keiichi and Belldandy's relationship—that loving someone is not as simple as she initially thought. With this newfound understanding, she returns to her duties.
