Tamaki Suou is the founder and president of the Ouran High School Host Club. He contrasts sharply with his best friend, Kyoya Ootori. While Kyoya is calm, cool, and calculating, Tamaki is flamboyant, emotional, and somewhat narcissistic. Despite this, he is deeply committed to his role as a host. As the "prince" type, he can charm any girl with sweet words—always genuine in his compliments. To him, all girls are beautiful, and making his guests happy is his greatest joy.
Tamaki often serves as comic relief in the series, particularly due to his dense and naive approach to his own feelings and his exaggerated emotional reactions to Haruhi's comments about his stupidity. He has a family complex, asking Haruhi to call him "Daddy" and referring to Kyoya as "Mommy." He enjoys classical piano music and plays exceptionally well, with one of his favorite pieces being Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major.
Tamaki is half-French and half-Japanese, with his full name being Rene Tamaki Richard Grantaine. His father, the superintendent of Ouran Academy, fell in love with Tamaki's French mother and divorced his first wife to marry her. This caused Tamaki's paternal grandmother to harbor a strong dislike towards him. Nonetheless, Tamaki continually strives to gain her acceptance into the Suou family. Because of his complicated family situation, Tamaki views the Host Club as a surrogate family and works hard to maintain that bond.
In the manga, Tamaki grows closer to Haruhi, although he insists it's mostly paternal. However, he confides in Kyoya that his lack of cheerfulness stems from his unrequited love for Haruhi.
