Haruhi Fujioka, the main heroine of the story, is an intelligent freshman at the prestigious and expensive Ouran High School. She cut her hair short after a little boy got gum stuck in it, which led the Host Club to mistake her for a boy. Unlike other students, she comes from a commoner family and earned her place at Ouran through a scholarship. On her first day, she accidentally breaks an 8 million yen vase belonging to the Host Club. To pay off her debt, she works as a host while disguised as a boy. Haruhi quickly adapts to her role and even finds it enjoyable, though she dislikes taking time away from studying and often finds the antics of the other hosts annoying. She lives with her cross-dressing father and has become very independent due to her mother's early death, never wanting anyone to worry about her. Despite her calm demeanor, she has a fear of thunderstorms.
In middle school, Haruhi was very popular and received at least one confession each month. However, like Tamaki, she is oblivious when it comes to love and unintentionally broke many hearts. Later in the manga, she realizes her feelings for Tamaki and starts blushing whenever he is around.
Eventually, she leaves Japan to study abroad, and the entire club joins her, including Honey and Mori. In the final chapter of the manga, there is an illustration of Tamaki and her getting married.
