Starmie is a Pokémon resembling two violet starfish, each with five appendages. The front starfish features a golden formation at its center, housing a red jewel core that can emit light in seven colors and looks like a cut gemstone. The second starfish attaches partially to the back of the first and can rotate 360 degrees, enabling Starmie to swim by spinning through water. It can also leap out of water and glide briefly through the air, as depicted in Pokémon Snap.
From its core, Starmie emits electrical waves powerful enough to reach distant parts of the universe. Its multi-colored glowing core is thought to be a communication method among its species. In the anime, the core darkens when Starmie is knocked unconscious and flickers when it's low on health. Due to its body shape and upward signal transmission, some speculate this Pokémon might be extraterrestrial. It has been known to cause headaches in humans upon close contact. Rarely seen in the wild because it requires a rare evolution stone to evolve, Starmie inhabits the deepest ocean regions. It feeds by absorbing tiny plankton while swimming and is preyed upon by Lumineon.
