Souichirou is a brash, spiky-haired teenager with a penchant for fighting. Growing up, his family's occupation as demon exorcists made them unpopular, leading to bullying and harassment. His apartment was often defaced with offensive messages. As a result, Souichirou started fighting back early on, retaliating against those who tormented him. In elementary school, he befriended Bob Makihara, and together they formed the Knuckle Bombs, beating up anyone they encountered to prove their strength. Upon arriving at Todo Academy, Souichirou quickly realized he wasn't as strong as he believed.
He fights using street-fighting techniques rather than formal martial arts, taking pride in being a thug and resorting to underhanded tactics. However, he draws the line at hitting women. After training with Maya Natsume, he learns more refined martial arts techniques, including the Forged Needle attack. Throughout the series, it is revealed that Souichirou and Aya Natsume share a mental connection, calling out to each other when in danger.
Obsessed with fighting, Souichirou takes great pride in it, though he believes fighting doesn't resolve anything and does it mainly for fun. Initially perceived as having average or below-average intelligence, he is cocky, easily angered, and always has a smart remark ready. He struggles with interacting with girls due to limited contact before high school. At Todo Academy, he loses his first major fight to Masataka Takayanagi. He falls in love with Maya Natsume, finding her similar to himself. Over time, he shows difficulty expressing affection but begins to change, becoming more intelligent and charismatic.
For instance, he motivates Kagesada Sugano, nicknamed "asshat" or "scum," to rejoin the Juken Club and become more courageous. Souichirou occasionally breaks the fourth wall, notably in chapter 3 when he refers to himself as the "hero" and in episode 24 of the anime when he calls Masataka a secondary character.
Aya is in love with him, but he seems uninterested because he loves Maya. However, he later shows signs of caring for Aya, such as comforting her after her fight with Hirohiko. This leads to an intimate moment between them. Maya’s feelings for Souichirou are unclear. Later, Shizuru Kamura also develops a crush on Souichirou, viewing Maya as a rival. Despite initial appearances, Souichirou is protective of his mother and plans to drop out of school to take over her work so she can retire after he competes in this year's tournament.
