Roy Mustang, known as the "Flame Alchemist," wields unparalleled control over heat and fire through alchemy. With specially designed gloves that spark when he snaps his fingers, Roy can produce anything from a small ember to burn a letter, to a massive inferno capable of annihilating a humanoid body in seconds. His mastery over alchemically enhanced flames is so precise that he can boil the water in someone's eyes and target enemies amidst chaos without harming allies.
On the surface, Mustang appears arrogant and playfully manipulative, yet he is highly intelligent and usually stays one step ahead of his opponents. He enjoys feeling in control of situations and is one of Edward Elric's superiors. At first glance, he seems to be just another military man chasing promotions and admiration, while also being known as a ladies' man who frequently goes on dates with different women. However, Mustang's true ambition is to become Führer to reform the government, atone for his sins during the Ishval War, and improve the country. He jokingly insists that female officers should wear miniskirts, which notably increased Havoc's loyalty and annoyed Hawkeye.
His noble goals earn him the unwavering loyalty of close friends like Lt. Col. Maes Hughes, Major Alex Louis Armstrong, and his subordinates, including Riza Hawkeye, Jean Havoc, Heymans Breda, Vato Falman, and Kain Fuery. While he maintains a friendly relationship with all his subordinates, his bond with second-in-command Riza Hawkeye is particularly deep. She has dedicated her life to supporting him, culminating in the final episodes of the anime when Mustang chooses her to accompany him on his most critical and perilous mission.
Despite being a hero of the Ishval War, Mustang remains tormented by its horrors and deeply regrets the lives he took.
After the Promised Day arrives, he is compelled to open the gate by Pride and Wrath. They initially try to persuade him to do it voluntarily by reviving Hawkeye, but he refuses. Consequently, Pride uses his Philosopher's Stone to open the gate for Mustang, granting him the ability to transmute without a circle, though at the cost of his eyesight.
