Rin is a model student and an idol at Shirou's school. She seldom interacts with other students and prefers solitude, often staying on the school's rooftop. Secretly, she is a Magus and a Master in the Fifth Holy Grail War. At the start of the anime, she summons Archer as her Servant, though she initially wanted Saber. Raised as the heir to her family's magecraft, Rin was taught by her father Tokiomi Toosaka to prioritize sorcery over personal interests.
Two centuries ago, the Toosaka House, alongside the Makiri and Einzbern estates, helped establish the Fuyuki Holy Grail Wars. The land of Fuyuki City, rich in spiritual power, belonged to Rin's ancestor Nagato Toosaka. He provided his property as the battleground for these wars under the Einzberns' request. As a kirishitan and Zelretch's pupil, Nagato wielded considerable influence within both the Mage's Association and the Church, allowing the Toosaka family to participate freely in the Holy Grail Wars.
Rin was groomed as the successor to her family's magecraft and instructed by her father to place sorcery above all else. Ten years ago, Tokiomi was chosen as a Master in the 4th Holy Grail War, leaving Rin to manage the Toosaka estate until his return. Her mother Aoi, debilitated by the war, was cared for by Kirei Kotomine. After her father’s death, Rin continued honing her skills with Kirei's guidance. To maintain a facade, Rin worked hard to earn admiration from her peers, despite being secretly stingy, tomboyish, and lazy.
After Tokiomi's death, the rights to the Toosaka lands were inherited by Aoi and then Rin after Aoi's death. Kirei managed them poorly as Rin's guardian, leading most profitable properties to fall into others' hands. Perhaps he believed wealth was detrimental to her upbringing, adhering to principles of humility and poverty.
Despite resenting the sacrifices made for tradition, Rin is fiercely competitive and eager to prove herself as a capable magus. Initially disappointed with summoning Archer, they soon reconciled and grew close. Seeking the Holy Grail to honor her late father and family name, Rin has little personal desire for it. Unaware to her sister Sakura, Rin feels guilty for abandoning her after her adoption into the Matou household, driving her to save Shirou, Sakura's love interest, from near-death.
Regarding Sakura, Rin exhibits a notable lack of observation. Despite her intelligence, she fails to notice significant changes about her sister, including her hair color. Upon visiting the Matou house, she realizes its implications but overlooks logical conclusions about Rider's true Master or Sakura's situation until explicitly informed. Given the horrific circumstances, perhaps it’s understandable she chose not to delve deeper.
