Pu'ar is a soft-spoken, shape-shifting blue creature and the constant companion of Yamcha. The name is a pun on Pu-erh tea. Despite appearances, Pu'ar is neither a cat nor a mouse; series creator Akira Toriyama mentioned that he drew the character to resemble a cat slightly. Pu'ar and Yamcha initially worked as a team, robbing travelers passing through their desert home. Pu'ar has the innate ability to levitate or fly, usually seen hovering at about head height. This character can shapeshift into any form, even inanimate objects, and maintain the transformation indefinitely. However, strength does not increase with the change, and Pu'ar cannot transform into consumable items like food or fuel. Pu'ar graduated from the same shapeshifting academy as Oolong but completed all training, unlike Oolong, who struggles to maintain transformations. Pu'ar appears frequently early in the series but becomes less prominent as the story progresses. Since the series primarily focuses on fighting, Pu'ar's role is often limited to reacting to the latest supervillains. There is some debate regarding Pu'ar's gender. Though voiced by several female actors and referred to with both male and female pronouns in the anime, Toriyama has referred to Pu'ar as "he" in an "Ask Me Anything" section of the manga.
