Gohan is one of the dual main characters in Dragon Ball Z, alongside his father, Goku.
Gohan is a reserved and studious individual who, unlike most Saiyans, lacks a natural inclination towards fighting as a child. However, driven by the need to protect his loved ones, he unlocks his immense half-Saiyan potential, eventually becoming one of the strongest characters in the series. As an adult, Gohan chooses to focus on his intellect, pursuing a career as a premier scholar, though he remains incredibly powerful, sometimes surpassing Goku, Piccolo, and Vegeta at various points in the story.
Initially, Gohan's relationship with Piccolo is strained due to fear, but it transforms after Piccolo sacrifices himself to save Gohan from Nappa. This act leads Piccolo to acknowledge how much Gohan has changed him during their year of training together. From then on, Piccolo serves as an uncle figure to Gohan. Similarly, Krillin becomes a close confidant, especially during the Namek saga and the beginning of the Buu saga.
Gohan shares a deep bond with his father, Goku. He draws strength from Goku's bravery, such as when Goku confronted Frieza on Namek. They also spend nearly a year together in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber during the Androids arc, strengthening their relationship. Gohan's admiration for his father is evident when he wears Goku's iconic orange gi while battling Buu.
His hobbies include reading, fishing, and scholarly research. Despite claiming not to share Goku's love for fighting, Gohan feels compelled to help when danger arises. He enjoys being a hero, as shown by his humorous and somewhat clumsy Great Saiyaman persona. Another notable aspect of his character is his fear of his own immense power, which was highlighted during his battle with Cell when he worried about potentially killing his opponent.
