She is inspired by the character Xuanzang from the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West." Despite being a parody of a monk, Bulma's Japanese name "Buruma" is derived from a popular brand of gym shorts for girls in Japan. Her English name, Bulma, is a playful adaptation of the word "bloomers," which were once a well-known brand of women's underwear in the early 20th century. Bulma is the second character introduced in the Dragon Ball series. Early on, she invents the Dragon Radar and embarks on a quest to find the legendary Dragon Balls. Initially, her goal is to use the Dragon Balls to wish for the perfect boyfriend. While searching for a nearby Dragon Ball, she encounters Son Goku. It is then that she discovers Goku possesses one of the balls (the four-star ball) he inherited from his grandfather, Gohan.
