Pan is a fictional character in the manga and anime series Dragon Ball Z, as well as Dragon Ball GT. She is a Human-Saiyan quarter-breed. In the original Japanese version, she was voiced by Yuko Minaguchi, while Elise Baughman voices her in the FUNimation dub, and Caitlynne Medrek in the Blue Water Studios redubs. Her name comes from Pan of Roman mythology, which initially suggests she might be named after her mother, Videl. However, it's a double-pun by author Akira Toriyama, as "Pan" also means bread in Japanese and Spanish, continuing her father Gohan's food-themed name and her mother's mythological naming theme.
Pan is introduced following the ten-year interval between the defeat of Majin Buu and the end of the written Dragon Ball series. She is the daughter of Son Gohan, making her the granddaughter of the main protagonist, Son Goku. As the only character with such diluted Saiyan heritage, it was stated in the Daizenshuu that she couldn't become a Super Saiyan. This is later contradicted by the Dragon Ball GT Perfect File books, which suggest she could ascend if she trained sufficiently. Toriyama explained that he couldn't design a female Super Saiyan due to the male-centric traits associated with the transformation.
Appearing in only three chapters of the manga, Pan's later life is expanded upon in the anime-only series Dragon Ball GT. Here, she travels the galaxy with her grandfather Goku and Trunks, the half-Saiyan son of Vegeta and Bulma. In the final episode of Dragon Ball GT, Pan is depicted as an old woman over 100 years old and is the grandmother of Son Goku Jr., who can become a Super Saiyan. This contradicts the Daizenshuu, which states that characters with less than half-Saiyan heritage cannot achieve the Super Saiyan transformation due to their diluted bloodlines.
