A student at Holy Forest Academy, Noboru did not have an easy time before Eikichi Onizuka arrived. He was frequently bullied, mainly by Uehara Anko and her group (in the live-action version, Miyabi Aizawa takes Anko's role). Noboru is exceptionally skilled at video games and has a passion for otaku culture, but he also shows considerable talent in crafting and making things. Anko's bullying becomes so severe that it drives Noboru to attempt suicide twice, both times by jumping off the school roof. Each time, he is saved by Onizuka, who ends up damaging Vice-Principal Hiroshi Uchiyamada's car in the process. This leads to a quick friendship between Noboru and Onizuka, which suits Onizuka well since he often borrows items from Noboru. Noboru's loyalty to Onizuka is unmatched; he even sells his game collection to help cover Onizuka's debts. During a school trip to Okinawa, Noboru is assigned a room with Anko and her friends, thanks to Onizuka's meddling. In retaliation for Onizuka and Noboru's antics, the girls tie him up and lead him into the dense jungle, where they all end up getting lost. Despite being mistreated, Noboru saves Anko's life when she falls off a cliff, becoming separated from the others. As the manga progresses, Noboru begins to enjoy Anko's company, and she starts to develop feelings for him.
