millennium earl

The story's main antagonist, also known as "the Earl of Millennium." He deceives people who have lost loved ones into creating Demons (Akuma). A sorcerer from ancient times, he aims to lead the world to destruction. In the past, he formed an alliance with the Noah Clan, who refer to him as "Duke Millennium" (except Road, who calls him Millenie). Katsura Hoshino, the creator, based the Earl on a legendary alchemist or preacher, possibly Count of St Germain or Nicolas Flamel, and there are hints that he might be reminiscent of Dorian Gray, referenced in the title "D.Gray-Man." In appearance, the Earl looks like a grotesque caricature of a Victorian gentleman—a portly figure dressed in a cape and top hat, with a permanent grin that stays even when he speaks or eats, and eyes hidden behind pince-nez spectacles. In the manga, almost every line of his dialogue ends with a heart. In the anime, he always uses polite Japanese. Throughout the story, he exhibits two distinct personalities. The first is his usual cheerful, friendly, and happy demeanor, akin to a kind old uncle. With the Noah, he behaves like a family member, especially playful and affectionate towards Road. His other personality is one of sheer, sadistic malice, capable of casually toying with people's lives. He wears a different hat in each encounter, each adorned differently. In a gag comic from Volume 2 of the manga, he is shown removing his hat to reveal another set of ears underneath. His primary weapon in combat is his umbrella named Lero. He has also demonstrated the ability to create massive explosions of dark energy. Additionally, the Earl can summon a large black sword, which is the antithesis of Allen's Crown Clown sword.
