A cheerful red-haired Exorcist of mixed race, Lavi aims to become a Bookman and works with the Black Order to stay close to significant events. He possesses an extraordinary memory, capable of memorizing every detail he observes. However, he mentioned that using both eyes would help him identify objects faster, such as the key given by Tyki Mikk. Typically, he uses his left eye while covering his right eye with an eye-patch. His anti-Akuma weapon is a size-shifting hammer named Oozuchi Kozuchi (大槌小槌, meaning "big hammer small hammer") or Nyoibo. The hammer can grow (満, man) or extend (伸, shin), increasing in weight but not affecting Lavi due to his conformity with it.
His hammer can summon various "judgments" represented by kanji symbols, possibly symbolizing classical elements. These seals can be used individually or combined. Some seals have question marks, indicating techniques he has yet to learn. Known techniques include:
- Hi Ban: Gouka Kaijin (劫火灰燼 火判, Fire Seal: Conflagration of Ash): Creates a torrent of flames shaped like a snake.
- Ten Ban: Raitei Kaiten (雷霆回天 天判, Heaven Seal: Thundering Lightning Whirling in the Skies): Releases an immense lightning bolt.
- Moku Ban: Tenchi Bankai (天地盤回 木判, Wood Seal: Roots Entwining Heaven and Earth): Controls natural objects.
- Konbo Ban: Gouraiten (コンボ判 剛雷天, Combo Seal: Strong Thunder of the Heavens): Combines fire and heaven seals to create a huge fiery and iron snake, also forming a shield-like flame wall.
Lavi's wood seal was revealed when he needed to clear clouds hiding Akuma. Initially marked with a question mark, it transformed into a usable kanji symbol. Water and earth seals also appear among his arsenal.
He affectionately calls Bookman "Panda," a converted Akuma "Chomesuke," and Arystar Krory "Kuro-chan" in the anime and "Kro-chan" in the manga. Only he and General Tiedoll address Kanda by his first name, Yuu. Lavi often teases Allen, calling him "beansprout" (moyashi), and considers himself Allen's older brother. A recurring gag involves his attraction to beautiful older women, often exclaiming "Strike!" with hearts in his eyes upon seeing one.
In recent chapters, Lavi fought an incarnation of his past created by Road in one of her dimensions. It was revealed that "Lavi" is just an alias, his 49th. Casting aside his old name and background demonstrated his commitment to being a Bookman. Initially cold and indifferent, Lavi gradually developed genuine care for others, moving away from his role as a mere observer. When he believed Allen was killed by Tyki Mikk, he attempted to avenge him.
During the fight against his past self, controlled by Road, his current personality was supposedly destroyed, causing his past self to emerge and attack Allen. Eventually, Lavi's present self resurfaced, suppressing his past self and attacking Road with a massive Hi-Ban. After Cross Marian's appearance, Lavi fell into a 'hole' created by the Millennium Earl's entrance. Despite shattering his Innocence while trying to save himself, he was later revived along with other lost Exorcists when Allen restored the Ark.
Now back at Black Order HQ waiting for his Innocence to be fixed, Lavi is unable to assist during Lulubell's attack. When a level four Akuma attacked Komui and others, he and Kanda acted as distractions so Lenalee could activate her new Innocence quickly. Translations of his name vary, but the correct spelling is confirmed as Lavi in the D.Gray-man Omake from episode 61.
