Marller was once the childhood friend of the goddesses who are the main characters, but she is now a demon. Urd and Mara used to be very close friends until Urd chose to become a goddess, leading to their separation.
Mara is considered the arch-rival of the goddesses, yet she enjoys spending time with them. Her primary duty is to increase the market share of demons on Earth by signing demonic contracts with humans. Additionally, she engages in side duties such as disrupting the activities of the goddesses and making them suffer. However, Mara often forgets her main duty and focuses more on her side duties because she believes that if the goddesses are eliminated, the market share will automatically reach 100%.
Mara has two notable weaknesses: she cannot tolerate good luck charms, and she cannot resist dancing when she hears rock music (or disco, according to the Dark Horse English translation).
Mara appears more determined and mischievous than outright cruel. She felt abandoned when Urd decided to fully embrace her role as a goddess, knowing it would likely end their friendship. This past experience and her duties as a demon contribute to her tunnel vision, prioritizing the disruption of the goddesses' lives. Despite this, she does enjoy spending time with the goddesses whenever the opportunity arises.
In the TV series, Mara is shown to suffer from insecurity and self-doubt due to her inability to increase the demons' market share, partly because of the presence of the goddesses. This insecurity reaches a point where she breaks down in tears when Urd tells her that she has no talent.
Mara is referred to by various names, including Marller or Marla. "Marller" is how Mr. Fujishima romanizes her name in English, while "Marla" reflects how a Japanese speaker would pronounce it and is also used by Geneon Animation for the Mini-Goddess series. In Buddhism, Mara is the name of a demon who tempted Gautama Buddha with visions of beautiful women. Similarly, in the series, Mara uses tactics like using Sayoko to distract Keiichi from Belldandy during her first appearance. Many Japanese speakers prefer not to pronounce her name as "Mara" because the word "mara" (陰茎) means "penis" in Japanese.
