Makoto is a dedicated member of the Oni-Baku-gumi, and even though his fighting skills are somewhat limited, he consistently supports his friends. He enjoys considerable success with women and eventually settles down with a girl named Mami. Before Saejima and Kamata reformed, they bullied Makoto. Later, he was manipulated into betraying Eikichi when the Kamakura and Shonan gangs initially crossed paths. Despite this, he showed bravery by remaining loyal to his friends.
Makoto stands out for being one of the few characters to change his hairstyle multiple times throughout the series.
