Maes Hughes is a character who is almost impossible not to adore. Often cast as the comic relief, he also reveals his serious and skilled side in combat. He shares a deep bond with Roy Mustang, being willing to go to any lengths to support Roy's ambitions. Maes is a loving and devoted husband to Gracia and a doting father to Elysia. He always carries pictures of his daughter in his uniform and never misses an opportunity to show everyone how adorable she is. Initially a Major in the Investigation Division, he eventually rises to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Tragically, Maes Hughes is killed by Envy after uncovering Father's plans. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, he is posthumously promoted to Brigadier General.
