Lupin III, the grandson of Arsène Lupin, is known as the world's most wanted thief. In his adventures, he often takes it upon himself and his gang to thwart other criminals involved in more serious offenses. While he sometimes appears incompetent, this is usually a ruse to catch his opponents off guard. Despite being arrested and jailed multiple times, he always manages to escape. His infatuation with Fujiko Mine frequently lands him in undesirable situations.
In the original manga by Monkey Punch, Lupin is portrayed as cocky, crude, and largely remorseless. He is a ladies' man who uses women for his own benefit and can be forceful with those who resist him. This contrasts sharply with his anime persona, who is a skilled thief but also a chivalrous goofball who enjoys helping those less fortunate. In the anime, while he considers himself a Casanova, his success with women varies depending on the writer.
Although loyalty within his gang has been an issue, with Fujiko willing to betray him and cohort Goemon vowing to eventually kill him, Lupin still comes to their aid in times of need. The team would rather endure torture than betray Lupin or vice versa. This loyalty extends even to Inspector Zenigata, whom Lupin regards as a respected friend and adversary. Zenigata reciprocates this respect and has vowed never to attempt to kill Lupin. Lupin's vendetta against the Tarantula Gang was partly about settling past betrayals and mostly about avenging Zenigata's near-death experience.
Lupin seems to enjoy the act of stealing more than possessing the treasure itself. He relishes the challenge of theft and, as long as he succeeds in the heist, isn't too upset if he ends up empty-handed. There have been instances where he has lost the object or intentionally discarded it. Sometimes, he steals items only to give them to someone else, either because they rightfully belong to them or need them more than he does.
When not engaged in criminal activities, Lupin spends his time dating beautiful women, fishing, race car driving, attending formal dinners, playing pool, gambling at casinos, and participating in café society. His favorite foods include French cuisine, sushi, and seafood; when on a job, he may settle for ramen noodles. In Lupin the Third Part V, he shows an affection for galettes. He also smokes cigarettes and occasionally cigars and kreteks; in the manga, he is seen smoking a briar pipe. His preferred cigarette brand is Gitanes. Lupin is a celebrated race car driver, competing in several international events when time allows. He is also a skilled sleight of hand artist who loves to confuse his opponents with various gimmicks, such as a cigarette that explodes into confetti, a gun with a spring-loaded boxing glove, and bubble gum that turns into plastic explosive after brief chewing.
